The Effects of the Roy’s Adaptation Model on Primigravida Women’s Self-Concept: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Most women do not have a positive self-concept and impression about themselves during pregnancy because they become less active and gain more weight. Self-concept significantly contributes to individuals' mental health. This controlled trial was performed to assess the effect of an intervention based on the Roy's adaptation model on self-concept among primigravida women. “…No similar study to the present study was found in terms of the application of apple vinegar for the treatment and prevention of striae gravidarum. However, use of apple vinegar for treatment of vaginal and skin fungal infections has produced useful results [30,31]. Given the positive effect of apple vinegar in reducing the size of striae, further studies on the effects of apple vinegar in preventing the incidence of striae gravidarum are recommended.…”

“…The risk of reflux, vomiting, and pulmonary aspiration, however, remains to be further studied in the prone position [5]. In a case study by Berg et al, removing pressure from the stomach by inserting a nasogastric tube dramatically increased the flowing volume and improved ventilation [14,31], which must have been due to the insertion of the tube after distension, causing gases, and liquids to be emptied and leading to a subsequent reduction in distension and an increased respiratory flow volume. In the present study; however, the gastric tube was in place before the intervention for the purpose of feeding and the patients were not experiencing distension at the beginning.…”

“…Swallowing air is higher in patients under positive pressure ventilation and therefore causes distension and esophageal reflux [13,14]. In addition, certain conditions in patients, especially ICU patients, increase the amount of air swallowed, such as swallowing the excess salivary and postnasal discharge, attempting to increase lip and tongue movement to produce more saliva and overcome the dry mouth caused by an open mouth, tracheal intubation or the anticholinergic side effects of some medications.…”

“…According to the Roy adaptation model, self-concept is consisted of the physical self-concept, personal selfconcept, and interpersonal self-concept in relationships with others. Psychologist has extensively examined his self-concept as one of the human existential dimensions to find mental coordination and cohesion (19).…”

“…Many studies have indicated the positive effect of employing this pattern on disease course improvement and adaptation promotion in chronic diseases such as heart failure, diabetes, and kidney failure (20,21). In the other research, the positive effect of nursing interventions based on the Roy adaptation model on the self-concept of pregnant women was studied (19). However, the use of supportive-instructional measures in self-concept context related to the promotion of mental health of teenage girls seems necessary.…”
