The effects of systemic isotretinoin and antibiotic therapy on the microbial floras in patients with acne vulgaris

Abstract: Systemic isotretinoin and antibiotic treatments in acne patients precisely caused variations in the microbial floras of several sites of the body, while isotretinoin was commonly more responsible than antibiotics. Knowing that alterations in the microbial colonization of the flora regions may preceede infectious disease and bacterial resistance, treatment options and follow-up procedures in acne vulgaris should be carefully determined to reduce the risk of destruction of the microbial flora.

“…Higher rates of colonization with S aureus have been seen in patients taking systemic isotretinoin, leading to increased rates of minor skin infections, such as folliculitis and furunculosis. 300,301 On rare occasions, the combination of cheilitis and S aureus colonization can cause lip or perioral abscesses, a serious complication requiring prompt attention. 300 The teratogenic effects of isotretinoin and the risk for retinoic acid embryopathy are well known.…”

After introduction of isotretinoin in the United States in 1982, there were hundreds of reports of isotretinoinexposed pregnancies within just several years, resulting in a high rate of congenital malformations.…”
