The Effects of Surface Modification on the Properties of Bonded NdFeB Magnets

Abstract: Two cladding methods for NdFeB powders, i.e., the modified organic silicon (MOS) cladding and the dichromate passivation reducing (DPR) cladding are exploited respectively for the preparation of polymer-bonded magnet and metal-bonded magnet. The effects of their cladding conditions and coating compositions, together with the effects of modifying additives are discussed. Compared with the conventional polymer-bonded magnet, MOS polymer-bonded sample shows better comprehensive properties including magnetic prope… Show more

“…Applying a silane coupling agent to coat Nd–Fe–B powders offers the necessary resistance to oxidation and corrosion during processing. Various silane agents can be utilised to treat the surface of Nd–Fe–B, such as tetraethoxysilane [ 16 ], N -(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane [ 17 ], 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane [ 18 ] and (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane [ 19 ]. These silane agents play a crucial role in enhancing the stability and protective properties of the surface of Nd–Fe–B powders, ensuring their suitability under the intended processing conditions.…”

“…Conventional methods to improve adhesion in polymer-bonded magnets include the surface treatment of the magnetic powder. For instance, passivation pre-treatment, such as phosphatizing [18] or chromatizating [19], followed by coating magnetic powders in an aqueous solution of silanes [18][19][20][21].…”

“…Silane coupling agents are widely used for metal pre-treatment based on their non-toxicity, low cost, and excellent adhesion. 24,25) There are many types of silane coupling agents with different pre-treatment processes and applicability. The silane coupling agent KH-560, which is often applied between metals and organic polymers, was optimised in this study.…”
