Pennsylvania (PA) State Racing Commissions regulate the endogenous androgenic steroid, testosterone (TES), in racing intact males (RIM) by quantification of TES in post-race samples. Post-race plasma samples (2209) collected between March 2008 and November 2010 were analyzed for TES, nandrolone (NAN), and other anabolic steroids (ABS). Of the 2209 plasma samples, 2098 had quantifiable TES ≥ 25 pg/mL. Plasma (mean ± SD) concentrations of TES and NAN in RIM were 329.2 ± 266.4 and 96.0 ± 67.8 pg/mL, respectively. Only 64.6% of RIM had quantifiable concentration of NAN, and there was no relationship between TES and NAN. Plasma TES concentrations were significantly (P < 0.0001) higher during the months of April, May, June, July, and August. A significantly higher (P < 0.006) plasma TES was observed in Thoroughbred (TB) (347.6 ± 288.5 pg/mL) vs. that in Standardbred (STB) (315.4 ± 247.7 pg/mL). Plasma concentrations of TES from breeding stallions (BS) were 601.6 ± 356.5 pg/mL. Statistically significant (P < 0.0001) lower plasma concentrations of the two steroids were observed in RIM horses. Based on quantile distribution of TES in the RIM and BS populations, 99.5% were at or below 1546.1 and 1778.0 pg/mL, respectively. Based on this population of RIM, the suggested upper threshold plasma concentration of endogenous TES in horses competing in PA should remain at 2000 pg/mL.

This study was conducted to evaluate the adverse effects of the anabolic steroid, boldenone undecylenate (BOL) on reproductive functions of male rabbits. Thirty white New Zealand mature male rabbits were divided into three groups (10 rabbits each). Group A rabbits served as a control group. Group B rabbits received 4.4 mg/kg body weight (bwt) BOL 5% oily solution. Group C rabbits received 8.8 mg/kg bwt BOL. Rabbits were injected intramuscularly twice weekly for two months. BOL had no significant effect on the bwt and bwt gain. Testes and epididymis weights were decreased significantly in the BOL-treated groups. BOL caused significant reduction in serum testosterone level, seminal volume, sperm motility, and sperm count. No abnormalities were detected in the sperm morphology of the BOL-treated groups. Histopathological alterations in the testes and epididymis were marked in the group C rabbits. These results indicate that administration of BOL exerts a significant harmful effect on the reproductive functions of male rabbits.

O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliar a influência da aplicação do undecilenato de boldenona, um éster esteroide com ação anabolizante, sobre os parâmetros de higidez, perfil hematológico e bioquímico, índices zootécnicos, parâmetros reprodutivos, desenvolvimento ósseo e avaliação de condicionamento físico de potros com idade superior a um ano. Foram utilizados doze potros sem raça definida, sendo 6 machos e 6 fêmeas, com idade média de 17 meses e peso corporal de 355,17 ± 26,63 kg e de 411,42 ± 29,49 kg, respectivamente. O consumo de matéria seca diário individual adotado foi de 2% do peso corporal (PC) dividida em 50% ração farelada e 50% feno de Cynodon cv. Tifton 85. Os animais permaneceram em piquetes sem acesso à pastagem e receberam água e suplemento mineral ad libitum. Os tratamentos foram divididos em 2 grupos: GI-Grupo Controle (n=6; 3 machos e 3 fêmeas); e GII-Grupo Tratado (n=6; 3 machos e 3 fêmeas). O período experimental foi dividido em: Fase 1 (D0-D28), sem exercício físico, e Fase 2 (D28-D84), com exercício físico em exercitador mecânico. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo. O grupo tratado (GII) recebeu a dose de undecilenato de boldenona (0,25 mg/kg de PC) no D0, D14, D28 e D42, via intramuscular profunda. Em todo o período experimental foram avaliados parâmetros de higidez, índices zootécnicos, parâmetros reprodutivos e desenvolvimento ósseo. Para avaliação de desempenho esportivo, nos momentos D28, D42, D56, D70 e D84, foram realizadas mensurações de lactato, glicemia, insulina, aspartato aminotransferase (AST) e creatina quinase (CK) após o exercício. A frequência cardíaca (FC) basal e de pico foram monitoradas com uso de frequencímetros digital na fase 2, com exercício físico. Os animais se mantiveram hígidos durante todo o período experimental, sem alteração em hemograma e bioquímica séria. Na avaliação reprodutiva não houve diferença significativa para as fêmeas e, nos machos, houve um discreto aumento testicular, provavelmente, relacionado à puberdade. A avaliação radiográfica comprovou que não houve alterações sugestivas de fechamento epifisário precoce. Nas avaliações zootécnicas, os machos do grupo tratado tiveram maior ganho no desenvolvimento. Na avaliação do desempenho esportivo, não houve diferença significativa nas mensurações de lactato, glicemia, insulina, AST, CK e frequência cardíaca. Diante dos dados obtidos, pode-se concluir que o uso de undecilenato de boldenona em potros não altera a saúde dos animais. O seu uso promoveu melhoras nos índices zootécnicos, principalmente nos machos em exercício físico.
