The effects of spent mushroom compost and municipal solid waste compost onPhytophthora drechsleriin vivo and in vitro

Abstract: Leached spent mushroom compost (SMC), municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) and their extracts, were tested to suppress Phytophthora drechsleri in cucumber plants. The composts were mixed with sand-loam soil in sterile and non-sterile types and were used to assess suppressiveness against P. drechselri in greenhouse experiments. The extracts of composts, in both sterile and non-sterile types, were applied to evaluate their effect in suppression of pathogen in vitro. The results of the experiments showed that al… Show more

“…To date, majority of the studies have focused on plant disease control and suppressive ability of compost tea ( Goonani et al, 2011 ; Litterick et al, 2004 ; Weltzien, 1992 ). A little plant disease control studies are available on aerated compost tea or non-aerated compost tea.…”

“…The ability of spent substrate from shiitake and oyster mushrooms to control plant disease has been documented. Spent shiitake and/or oyster mushroom substrates have been reported to control bacterial wilt disease (Ralstonia solancearum) in potatoes [4,5], stem-based rot in onions [6], damping off disease (Phytophthora drechsleri) in cucumbers [7], damping off disease (Rhizoctonia solani) in tomatoes [8] and late blight disease (Phytophthora capsici) in peppers [9]. Spent mushroom substrate can control plant diseases through several mechanisms.…”

“…Spent mushroom substrate can control plant diseases through several mechanisms. The efficacy of spent mushroom compost has been related to the activity of microorganisms that are antagonistic to plant pathogens [7,[10][11][12]. Spent mushroom substrates also contain antimicrobial substances that inhibit pathogen growth [13,14].…”
