The effects of Nigella sativa on quality of life, disease activity index, and some of inflammatory and oxidative stress factors in patients with ulcerative colitis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Nigella sativa (NS) supplementation in patients with ulcerative colitis. Two grams of NS powder or placebo were consumed for 6 weeks by 46 patients with active mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.Using valid and common questionnaires of colitis severity and blood sampling, we estimated disease activity index, quality of life, and some of inflammatory and oxidative stress factors at baseline and after 6 weeks of supplementation. NS-elevated tumor necrosis fac… Show more

“…Oxidative stress acts as an essential factor in the promotion of lipid peroxidation, damage proteins, and DNA biomolecules and results in the development of multiple diseases, such as obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (Hadi et al, 2016; Nikkhah‐Bodaghi et al, 2019; Santilli, Guagnano, Vazzana, La Barba, & Davi, 2015). The hallmark of many acute and chronic diseases is the overproduction of prooxidant species with an antioxidative capacity inadequacy.…”

“…Other research showed with intake of 2000 mg/day of N. sativa during 12 months there is a significant improvement in serum TAC level for patients with diabetes (Kaatabi et al, 2015). Nikkhah‐Bodaghi et al (2019) showed that supplementation of 1,500 and 2000 mg/day N. sativa powder did not alter serum TAC level, but improved serum MDA levels in patients with ulcerative colitis following 6 weeks. Controversial outcomes can be explained through numerous factors including: background of various diseases, dosages, personal differences, duration of intake, confounding factors, differences in quality of consumed products within the clinical trials, the area of production, the extraction method, and oil storage procedure.…”

“…Collectively, results are moderately promising but not compelling. Very recently, nigella preparations have been evaluated to assess their renal-stone-dissolving properties (Ardakani et al, 2019) and in ulcerative colitis patients (Nikkhah-Bodaghi, Darabi, Agah, & Hekmatdoost, 2019). TQ is generally considered to be the most important active constituent and has been extensively studied preclinically, but surprisingly, only one clinical study on TQ could be found, a pilot study on intractable paediatric seizures, where positive results were reported (Akhondian et al, 2011).…”

“…Die Gesamt-Scores des "Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index Questionnaire" und des "Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire-9" unterschieden sich nicht zwischen den Gruppen. Doch sollte das Ergebnis mit anderen Zubereitungen aus dem Schwarzkümmel (Öl, Extrakte) überprüft werden [19].…”
