The effects of school, family, self‐concept, and deviant behaviour on adolescent suicide ideation

Abstract: In this study of a population of junior and senior high school students in a mid‐sized, Western city, adolescent emotional and ideological disparity with parents and disparity between the importance the adolescent placed on academic achievement and satisfaction with academic achievement were linked to suicide ideation through the intervening variables of self‐esteem, purpose in life, and two forms of deviant behaviour — alcohol use and eating disorder. Self‐confidence and the deviant behaviours of delinquency … Show more

“…Depression and depressive symptoms have been found to be linked to suicide ideation [43,44], and in a sample of exclusively Mexican-American adolescents, two studies have found that depressive symptoms predict suicidal behavior [45,46]. Low self-esteem and self-derogation are also two individual factors related to adolescent suicidal behavior [47,48]. Razin et al [49] found that Latina adolescent suicide attempters often blamed themselves for problems in the family.…”

“…Adolescent suicidal behavior has been associated with several risk factors including depression, conduct problems, impulsivity, low self-esteem, and substance abuse (e.g., see Apter, Bleich, Plutchik, Mendelsohn, & Tuano, 1988;Dukes & Lorch, 1989;Kashden, Fremouw, Callahan, & Franzen, 1993). Pearson product-moment correlations were computed to examine the relations between the BRFL-A subscales and several of these variables, using the MMPI-A content scales.…”
