The effects of neutral argon plasma versus electrocoagulation on tissue in advanced-stage ovarian cancer: a case series

Abstract: Background The aim of surgery for advanced-stage ovarian cancer is a complete cytoreduction, because this is the most important independent prognostic factor for prolonged survival. Yet this can be difficult to achieve when there are micrometastases on the intestinal mesentery or intestines. The PlasmaJet device is an instrument to remove these micrometastases, but little is known about the depth of damage in human tissue compared to electrocoagulation devices. Me… Show more

“…In a series of 10 samples collected from 8 women with ovarian endometriomas, a mean depth of necrosis of 145 µm was found [ 22 ]. Finally, thermal effects of PJ and electrosurgical devices were compared in a series of 106 tissue samples of 17 ovarian cancer patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery [ 23 ]. Devices were used in vivo on to-be-resected tissues of reproductive organs, and intestines as well as on membranes.…”

“…A possible explanation could be the differences in tissue damage when working with different equipment during surgery. The PlasmaJet infiltrates the tissue less deeply than electrosurgery [29]. With less tissue damage, the process of tissue repair (inflammation, proliferation by fibrogenesis, and angiogenesis and remodeling) will proceed differently than when there is more tissue damage.…”
