The Effects of Mulches on Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) in Respect of Yield Attribute in Ecosystem of Coastal Bengal

Abstract: Mulching has become an important practice in modern field production. The use of mulches in vegetable production is undergoing a radical change away from high input, nonrenewable resources, such as plastic, to the use of high-residue organic mulches from cover crop. The purpose of this present study was to compare the growth and yield of tomato when grown under different organic and inorganic mulches. The experiment was conducted with four treatments in two consecutive years (2016-2017 and 2017-2018) at instru… Show more

“…Another reason to get low yield by conventional practice of irrigation might be due to less availability of nutrients for crop growth due to leaching and high weed infestation between the crops. These results showed the same trend as the results obtained in references [7,8,11] who showed that drip with the combination of plastic mulch is yielding higher.…”

“…The increased fruit yield with groundnut shells mulch was attributed to registering significantly higher number of fruits per plant. This increased × 100 Weed index = X-Y X WCE = ×100 DMC -DMT DMC tomato yield may be due to better development of roots and vegetative growth, better nutrients uptake in mulched plots; improved soil microbial activity (Bhagat et al, 2016) and less normal leaching of nitrogen (Kundu et al, 2019) and improved soil physical properties (Orji and Eke, 2018). The next higher fruit yield was noticed in saw dust mulch and the lowest fruit yield was recorded in no mulch treatment.…”

“…In Nigeria, tomato is largely cultivated in the North under irrigated farming systems. While it can be grown almost throughout the year ( Kundu et al., 2019 ), its yield is directly affected by water deficit resulting from scarce rainfall and high soil evapotranspiration rates ( Byari and Al-Sayed, 1999 ) which affect superficial and underground sources of water supply. This scenario is further worsened by the inability of resource poor farmers to afford irrigation during periods of rainfall scarcity due to unavailability and/or high cost of irrigation facilities in many areas.…”
