The Effects of Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (Fe3O4) on Some Biological Aspects of Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract: In this study, 18-38 nm-sized and spherical-shaped nanopowder Fe3O4 NPs concentrations (0.4, 2, 10, 50, 250 µg/10 µl) was force-fed to sixth instar (180 ± 20 mg) Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae under laboratory conditions. The effects of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) on the pupal and adult developmental times, pupal and adult weights and adult longevity of G. mellonella were recorded. Results showed that treating G. mellonella with 250 μg/10 µl Fe3O4 NPs significantly increased … Show more

“…Fe 3 O 4 -NPs are less toxic than other metal oxide NPs, but they could effectively enter the cell nucleus. Along similar lines as CuO-NPs, Fe 3 O 4 -NPs reactivity is linked to surface modification, concentration, size, shape, dose dependency, obtainment method, etc., and could induce: disruptions of the oxidative balance cytotoxicity immunotoxicity neurobehavioral toxicity inflammation ferroptosis fibrosis/cirrhosis and loss of liver function [61,[115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124] Table 2. “…Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is an insect species belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae, which has developed holometabolism and has been the most preferred model organism as a model organism in many scientific studies in recent years (Wojda et al 2020, Eskin et al 2021, Ménard et al 2021). G. mellonella is a species that grows easily under laboratory conditions, has high ecological adaptability, a very short life cycle, lay many eggs at once and healthy individuals are obtained.…”

“…Plasma fluid is responsible for storage, transport, and immunity (Dere et al 2015). Hemocytes are cells responsible for cellular immunity in the hemolymph and play important roles in development and immunity (Ali Mohammadie Kojour et al 2020, Hillyer and Pass 2020, Eskin et al 2021). In the last decade, hemolymph has become one of the most widely used tissues in the detection of oxidative and genotoxic damage due to its rich content such as minerals, vitamins, hormones, essential nutrients, molecules related to gas exchange, and immune system elements (Büyükgüzel et al 2007, Chapman et al 2013, Stalmach et al 2015, Tunçsoy and Özalp 2021).…”
