The effects of infusions of synthetic adrenocorticotrophin in the conscious calf

Abstract: SUI[MARY 1. A technique is described by which the whole of the effluent blood from the right adrenal gland can be collected as required from conscious, unrestrained calves. The technique may be used to measure adrenal blood flow gravimetrically and to compute the output of adrenal hormones under various conditions in the normal calf.2. In a group of seven calves mean cortisol output from the right adrenal gland was found to vary between 20 and 40 ng. kg-' min-' and corticosterone between 6 and 18 ng. kg-' min-… Show more

“…infusions of ACTH. Following the removal of the right kidney and cannulation of the right renal vein an adrenal clamp was emplaced as described previously (Edwards et al 1974. The right splanchnic nerve was cut immediately below the diaphragm and the peripheral end enclosed in a fluid electrode designed to minimize the spread of stimulus to surrounding tissues.…”

“…Undiluted adrenal effluent blood can be collected from conscious calves, without damaging the innervation, by means of an 'adrenal clamp' (Edwards et al 1974). The peripheral end of the splanchnic nerve in these animals can be stimulated below behavioural threshold (Bloom & Edwards, 1980), thus avoiding anaesthesia which modifies the adrenal medullary responses to stimulation via the innervation substantially and could also affect cortical responses.…”

“…Intravenous infusions of synthetic adrenocorticotrophin at a dose of 5 0 ng. kg-1 min-produced a substantial increase in the output of both cortisol and corticosterone from the right adrenal, together with a significant rise in blood flow through the gland (Edwards, Hardy & Malinowska, 1974).…”

“…The catheter with the tip in the thorax was employed for intra-aortic infusions of acetylcholine above the level of the adrenal gland. The right kidney was removed, the right renal vein was cannulated and an adrenal clamp emplaced (Edwards, Hardy & Malinowska, 1974;Edwards, Furness & Helle, 1980). The right splanchnic nerve was cut immediately below the diaphragm and a Braunula cannula inserted into the jugular vein to provide a conduit for i.v.…”
