The effects of Glehnia littoralis and Andrographis paniculata extract on hair growth in human follicle dermal papilla cells

Abstract

In modern society, as hair serves not only protecting the body but also as a tool for self-expression, interest in hair care and research using natural products on hair growth are increasing. In this study, we examined the effects of Glehnia littoralis (G.littoralis) and Andrographis paniculata (A. paniculata) on hair growth. First, antioxidant and nitrite scavenging effect of G.littoralis and A.paniculata were evaluated. At the results, G.littoralis and A.paniculata significantly reduced ABTS + radical and nitrite. Next, qRT-PCR was conducted to investigate the effects of G. littoralis and A. paniculata on hair growth factor such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Wnt/-catenin signaling pathway which is essential for hair follicle morphogenesis and regeneration. At the results, VEGF, Wnt5a and catenin mRNA expression increased by G.littoralis and A. paniculata in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC). Interestingly, these effects were potentiated when mixture of Glehnia littoralis and Andrographis paniculata was tested. Taken together, these results suggest that G. littoralis and A. paniculata may be able to use as functional materials of natural productderived drug for alopecia and hair growth by protecting against oxidative stress, increasing VEGF expression and Wnt/-catenin signaling pathway in HFDPC.
