Solution thermodynamics and mutual diffusivity of the system carbon dioxide-molten poly(caprolactone) (PCL) have been investigated experimentally in the temperature range 70-85 °C and at pressures up to 6.5 MPa. Sorption data have been interpreted on the basis of Sanchez-Lacombe lattice theory. Sanchez-Lacombe parameters for pure PCL have been evaluated by fitting experimental pressure-volume-temperature data obtained by using a high-pressure dilatometer, while parameters for carbon dioxide have been taken from the literature. Information on the free volume of the mixture, as gathered from the solution thermodynamics analysis, has been used in the classical free-volume theory proposed by Duda and Vrentas to fit mutual diffusivity data, obtained from sorption kinetics experiments.

This paper reviews the technology of melt vibration (more specifically at low frequency) to reduce viscosity during processing of plastics and to enhance mechanical px-formance of the solidified parts. The effect of vibration frequency and amplitude on melt viscosity is explained in terms of shear-thinning criteria. The effect of pressure and temperature on shear thinning is also reviewed to predict how these variables interfere with melt vibration. Practical applications of the principles of melt vibration are provided in injection molding, extrusion and compression molding/tliermoforming, from reduction of viscosity to lowering processing temperature and pressure to the elimination of melt defects and weld lines, to the enhancement of mechanical properties, stiffness and strength, by modification of the amorphous and semicrystalline texture and orientational state. A hydrostatic high pressure cell is used to record pressure resolved wideangle X-ray microdiffraction data (WAXS) from Bombyx mori silkworm silk fibers with in situ pressurization in the range of 0.01−0.5 GPa (0.1−5 kbar). From the pressure dependent peak positions of ( 002), ( 020), (200), and (210) Bragg reflections the (anisotropic) elastic moduli of compression were determined for the different unit cell axes of the crystalline fraction of silk fibroin, comprising of stacked polyalanine β-sheets. The data are compared with X-ray diffraction results previously obtained from silkworm silk at tensile load and spider silk data at high hydrostatic pressure and indicate a different response of the silk fibroin structure to pressure versus tensile load. The response of the unit cell of silkworm silk fibroin to the applied pressure is discussed and modeled taking into account the weak van der Waals bonds between protein β-sheets. Differences are pointed out between the responses of silk's nanostructure to unidirectional (tensile) load versus the undirected pressure load. Next to the direct determination of the elastic moduli for the different crystal lattice parameters, the pressure response of what is usually referred to as the amorphous phase is also considered.
