Background Smoking is one of the main causes of lung cancer. It was estimated that tobacco smoking might kill 10 million people annually in the next 20–30 years, and Shisha smoking has been a common habit worldwide during the last 20 years, especially in the Middle East. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Shisha smoking and to make comparisons among three countries in the Middle East, thereby establishing factors associated with shisha smoking among university students in Palestine, Jordan, and Turkey. Method An online cross-sectional study was carried out among university students from Palestine, Jordan, and Turkey. A total of 2030 students were selected for the study. The students were asked to answer an online structured questionnaire consisting of questions concerning the prevalence and patterns of Water pipe smoking and associated factors. Result The overall prevalence of Water pipe smoking was 31.8%. Less than a quarter of university students (21.7%) had ever smoked Water pipe. The highest percentage of current Water pipe smokers were Palestinians (36.11%), and the lowest percentage was from Turkey (20.23%). Approximately 43% of Water pipe smokers believe that they will be addicted to Water pipe smoking and almost half of them smoke Water pipe daily. The highest percentage of Water pipe smokers were university students 25 years old and above. However, the highest percentages of university students who are Water pipe smokers were students with a low monthly income. The university students living with their families were smoking Water pipe less frequently than students living in private residencies. Conclusion This study concludes that there is a high prevalence of Water pipe smoking among university students in Palestine, Jordan, and Turkey. The highest percentage was found among Palestinians, which might be because there are no Water pipe smoking regulations in Palestine, whereas there are in Turkey. Monthly income and living with the family were factors affecting the prevalence of Water pipe smoking.

Water pipe smoking has been practiced extensively for about 400 years. Water pipe smoking is common in the Saudi Arabia. Water-pipe smoking exposes smokers to high levels of tobacco and toxins. An observational and cross-sectional survey carried among 1170 participants to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice about water-pipe smoking among Saudi population. Data was collected and obtained by the online questionnaire that has been created in Google form and then published in different social media platforms over a period from September 2019 to November 2019. The data were entered in Excel and analyzed in EpiInfo7 statistical software to get descriptive statistics. Results: About 70% were females and 30% male, 43% of them are university students with 83% in the age group of the 18 -25 high participants. Low knowledge of Carbon monoxide poisoning effects = 78%, While 54% of the participants showed low knowledge about infectious disease transmitted by water-pipe. The Knowledge about water pipe contents and carbon monoxide poisoning was low. Further efforts will be necessary to increase the level of awareness among participants in Saudi Arabia regarding water pipe contents and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Breastfeeding and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia: Potential Leukemogenesis in Children in Developing Countries

Background: Breastfeeding (BF) in infancy is associated with a decreased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). However, most of the studies were conducted in developed countries, neglecting developing countries where mothers might be exposed to different carcinogenic substances which could be transferred through breastmilk. Methods: This is a case-control study which was conducted in the major paediatric cancer centre in Syria. Data of case and control groups were obtained from the hospital's records. Only patients with no hereditary or chromosomal syndrome and aged 4 years and younger were included. The case group included ALL patients and control group contained hospital patients who visited its various clinics. The patients were categorised into 3 groups depending on their feeding habits before the age of 6 months. Results: Our sample contained 70 patients in the case group with 42 (60%) being males and 82 patients in the control group with 52 (55.3%) being males. Sixty (85.7%) cases and 59 (72%) controls were exclusively breastfed. We found a statistically signi cant difference when comparing cases and controls in BF patterns (P<0.05) as cases were exclusively breastfed more frequently. Exclusive breastfeeding was found more frequently in the case group compared to other patterns of infancy feeding P=0.04 (OR, 2.339; CI, 1.025-5.336). In case group, parents of a low educational level breastfed their children more frequently (P<0.05). Number of siblings was not associated with ALL or any of its variables. Furthermore, infancy feeding pattern correlation with gender, being born with no complications, consanguinity, CD10, FAB classi cation, ALL-subtype, risk, and family history were insigni cant.
