The effects of gas cooling on removal of SOF and sulphate by electrostatic precipitator for marine diesel

Abstract: Particulate matters (PM), SOx and NOx in exhaust gases emitted from marine diesel engines may cause serious problems in human health and coastal environments. Therefore, their emissions have been regulated in MARPOL Treaty 73/78 Annex VI of IMO Air Pollution Control since 2005. In this paper, the reduction of PM for marine engines was investigated using an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with a heat exchanger. Experiments were carried out to confirm the reduction of PM, which were Dry soot, Soluble Organic Fr… Show more

“…ESP has capability to remove the PAHs and it is reported that ESP was able to remove the emission of PAHs from the diesel engine (Phirun et al,2008). The diesel particulate matter (DPM) which includes sulphates, soluble organic fraction (SOF) and dry soot were removed by ESP having a heat exchanger (Zukeran et al,2014). Due to the incomplete combustion of fuel, both the soluble organic fraction (SOF) and PAHs are formed.…”

“…In the late 1980s, Haldor Topsoe A/S created and patented wet sulfuric acid, in which SO x and water vapor react to form liquid sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) at high concentrations by cooling the exhaust gas to lower than the dew point of sulfuric acid [6]. Zukeran et al [7] studied the removal rate of SO 2 and particulate matter (PM) reduction in marine engines via water condensation in flue gas. Mist particles were formed as a result of water condensation, and they were collected using an electrostatic precipitator.…”
