The effects of forest thinning on understory diversity in China: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: Forest management has been widely used to maintain and improve multiple ecosystem services. However, large‐scale synthesis of the effects of forest management on understory diversity, especially regarding the effects of thinning, has not been well represented in China. Therefore, we synthesized 146 peer‐reviewed publications and conducted a meta‐analysis to evaluate the response of understory diversity (species richness) and seven related variables to forest thinning in China. Overall, forest thinning signific… Show more

“…This might be attributed to the effect of stand age, which indicates the time of colonization for understory plants (Vellend et al, 2006). The stand age acts as an important precondition when assessing different drivers of plant species diversity (Li et al, 2020). It can determine not only the light heterogeneity but also the substrate diversity and soil conditions, thereby substantially influencing the understory plant species diversity (Kumar et al, 2018).…”

“…Thinning had the potential to regulate stand density and improve the stand environment. It could affect biodiversity in the forest ecosystem (Li et al, 2020) and increase soil C storage (Gong et al, 2021b). Previous studies suggested that understory herb diversities and biomass were decreased under thinning disturbance, emphasizing the significance of considering thinning intensities (Wang et al, 2021; Yu et al, 2022; Zhang, Dong, et al, 2023).…”
