The effects of extremely low-frequency magnetic fields on melatonin and cortisol, two marker rhythms of the circadian system

Abstract: In the past 30 years the concern that daily exposure to extremely low-frequency magnetic fields (ELF-EMF) (1 to 300 Hz) might be harmful to human health (cancer, neurobehavioral disturbances, etc) has been the object of debate, and has become a public health concern. This has resulted in the classification of ELF-EMF into category 2B, ie, agents that are "possibly carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Since melatonin, a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland, has been s… Show more

“…Moreover, objective assessment should be conducted for symptomatic patients with muscle fatigue and pain, in more severe cases, patients with ischemic disorders such as atherosclerosis and diabetes, to clarify the effects and mechanisms of 50 Hz MFs on ischemic regions. In addition, by exposure to 50 Hz MFs, there is a possibility that some specific biomarkers, such as melatonin, cortisol, serotonin and dopamine, could be affected [ 43 , 44 ] and/or pain perception pathways via opioid receptors could be inhibited [ 45 ]. Further studies should be needed to investigate the MF-based therapeutic applications and elucidate the underlying mechanisms of MF effects on pain relief and recovery of muscle fatigue.…”

“…Several factors, like light pollution during night or moving across time zones, may lead to the disruption of the melatonin secretion rhythm and circadian disorganization, which undoubtedly has a negative impact on various aspects of health [ 13 , 14 , 16 , 24 , 25 ].…”

“…The epidemiological studies provided interesting and very important data on the influence of electromagnetic fields on melatonin and its metabolite—6-sulfatoxymelatonin—in humans. Many of these investigations concerned the effects of an extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF), which is generated by outdoor high- and medium-voltage electricity power lines, indoor electrical power supply, and electrical appliances [ 25 ].…”

“…MFs are either of natural origin (geomagnetic field, intense solar activity, thunderstorms) or human-made (factories, transmission lines, electric appliances at work and home, magnetic resonance imaging, medical treatment, etc.) [ 2 ]. Common used frequencies of electric and magnetic fields of the electric power supply and of electric and magnetic fields generated by electricity power lines and electric/electronic devices are 50 Hz in Europe and 60 Hz in North America [ 2 ].…”
