Present study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, antibacterial, antifungal, and cytotoxic activity of Laurus nobilis grown in Tabuk region of Saudi Arabia. Dried leaves of L. nobilis were extracted with various solvent with increasing polarities. Solvent extracts exhibited variable inhibition zones against bacterial pathogens, however all the solvent extracts showed significant inhibition against fungal pathogens. Acetone extracts had the largest inhibition zone against Streptococcus pnemoniae (37.16 ± 0.23 mm) while ethanol and methanol extract showed the most efficient percentage inhibition against mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata (91.33 ± 0.47; 90.66 ± 0.94).High cytotoxicity was demonstrated by methanol and aqueous extracts (IC50 14.90µg/ml, 24.56 µg/ml), while acetone extracts showed moderate effects on cell inhibition (IC50 41.43µg/ml).The significant activity shown by the bay leaf extracts could be attributed to monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, phenylpropanoids, phenols, and other important phytoconstituents identified in GC-MS and FTIR studies. Our findings clearly show significant antifungal, antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of solvent extracts of bay leaves, which could be attributed to the presence of wide range of phytochemicals. Since plants derived natural products are less toxic, cheaper, and have negligible side effects, they would serve as an excellent alternative to antimicrobial and chemotherapeutic drugs.

Changes in phenolic composition and biological activities were investigated in different Limoniastrum monopetalum L. organs. For that, 80% aqueous acetone extracts were used to estimate total phenolic contents and their antioxidant activities were evaluated using DPPHÁ and O 2 Á-radical scavenging activities and reducing power.The efficiency of organ extracts was tested against human pathogen strains. Ultimately, acid hydrolysis of all organs was subjected to RP-HPLC for phenolic identification. Results showed that flower extracts exhibited the highest polyphenol (65.42 GAE/g DW) and flavonoid (35.36 CE/g DW) contents. Stems were enriched in condensed tannin content (21.4 mg CE/g DW) and displayed the best antiradical activities and the highest reducing power. Besides, stem and gall extracts showed the highest efficiency against pathogenic bacteria as compared with those of flower. Concerning the antifungal test, a slight activity was found in gall extracts. The RP-HPLC showed a difference in phenolic compounds that varied as function of organ. In fact, the major phenolic compound varied as function of organ. Results suggest that L. monopetalum could be a promising source of biomolecules for therapeutic and nutraceutical industries and the difference between organs may be related to their physiological role.

С 2008 г. по 2013 г. экспорт высушенного листа лавра Турци-ей увеличился с 6 000 тонн до 12 000 тонн (с 18,5 млн. до 30 млн. US$) [2].Крупнейшими импортёрами лаврового листа в мире являются Вьетнам, США, Россия, Польша и Германия [2].На территории России лавр произрастает в юго-западных районах Краснодарского края, в Кры-му.В народной медицине народов разных стран ли-стья лавра применяются при лечении диабета, забо-леваний, вызванных грибковыми и бактериальными инфекциями. Извлечения из листьев лавра обладают противовоспалительными, успокаивающими, ан-тиэпилептическими свойствами [3,4]. Настой ис-пользуется при различных желудочно-кишечных заболеваниях, а также при метеоризме в качестве ве-трогонного средства [5].Извлечения из листьев лавра благородного обла-дают противовоспалительной [6,7] M. Riaz с соавторами исследовали химический состав эфирного масла, извлеченного из листьев лав-ра, произрастающего в Пакистане [32]. Выход масла был самым низким (0,13%) в марте и самым высо-ким (0,36%) в сентябре. Цинеол и эвгенол оказались главными компонентами во всех образцах, однако на-блюдались различия в количественном содержании компонентов. K. Kevseroglu и др. изучили онтогене-тическую и дневную изменчивость эфирного масла из листьев лавра, выращиваемого в Турции [33]. Ис-следования показали, что содержание эфирного мас-ла в листьях незначительно варьировало в течение дня, но сезонная вариация была существенной. Са-мый высокий процент эфирного масла был установ-лен в августе (1,46%) и июле (1,33%), а самый низкий -в мае и сентябре (0,59% и 0,74%, соответственно). Авторами обнаружена положительная корреляция между содержанием эфирного масла в листьях и зна-чениями температуры.
