“…Following previous studies (Li et al, 2018;Yan & Sommer, 2019;Yan et al, 2012b), we included single-fixation landing position on the pretarget word as a covariate to capture the influence of preview space. The main reason for focusing on trials where the pretarget words were fixated on only once (i.e., single fixation cases) is that they carry few mislocated fixations (Nuthmann et al, 2005).…”

“…or reading emotional words embedded in simple sentences [12][13][14][15][16][17]. These studies show that the valence of a word influences reaction times in a lexical decision task [10,11,18] and eye fixation times when words are presented in sentence context [12][13][14][15][16][17]. To conclude, these results indicate that the valence of words plays a crucial role in word recognition, whether presented in isolation or embedded in a sentence context.…”

“…Most of the previous experimental studies on emotion effects on reading have studied emotional word recognition [10,11]. or reading emotional words embedded in simple sentences [12][13][14][15][16][17]. These studies show that the valence of a word influences reaction times in a lexical decision task [10,11,18] and eye fixation times when words are presented in sentence context [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…These studies have suggested that higher processing load, caused by extra articulatory demands when adults' loud reading or children's low visual decoding and word recognition skills, leaves less attentional resource available for parafoveal processing of upcoming words and leads to a smaller perceptual span. There is also evidence from the gaze-contingent boundary paradigm showing that parafoveal processing efficiency is modulated by processing load during the reading of Chinese sentences (e.g., Yan & Sommer, 2019;Yan et al, 2010b; see also Yang et al, 2009Yang et al, , 2012, for a crossexperiment comparison). In the present study, with, on average, more complex visual forms of words, it was likely that more visual decoding processing was required when reading TC sentences than SC sentences.…”
