Visual searches are done frequently and commonly while doing other tasks. Previous research has shown that multitasking inhibits performance of tasks done together, however little has examined visual search and word recall performed together, especially when there are an undisclosed number of targets to be found. The purpose of this study is to examine how multitasking affects visual search and word recall. Participants recalled words shown on a heads-up display while simultaneously searching realistic landscape images for target distortions. The participants also completed these tasks individually. It was found that during multitasking, participants found significantly less targets and remembered significantly less words than when doing those tasks individually. It was also shown that prioritizing tasks led to small improvements in performance for that task. The results of this study could be used to influence design of technology made for individuals searching environments who also need to communicate information.

Introdução: A utilização do jogo, enquanto sistema de avaliação em dupla tarefa, tem vindo a demonstrar um potencial relevante pelas suas propriedades. Objetivo: Testar a aplicabilidade do jogo analógico na avaliação de dupla tarefa em pessoas idosas. Metodologia: Foi realizado um estudo observacional, transversal, com uma mostra de 13 idosos com capacidade de caminhar curtas distâncias. A amostra foi caracterizada nas variáveis sociodemográficas, da mobilidade funcional (Timed-up and Go Test-TUG) e da função cognitiva (6-CIT). Os participantes foram avaliados na sua performance (tempo/seg.) no jogo Labirinto (Agilidades, Inc.) nas diferentes modalidades: grelhas de jogo limpo (S, M e L) vs grelhas de jogo com pistas cognitivas. Para cada modalidade foram recolhidas 3 tentativas. Depois de uma análise descritiva (mediana, IIQ) da performance no jogo, no TUG e no 6-CIT, foi analisada a diferença estatística entre níveis de jogo (wilcoxon) e calculada a correlação entre a performance, o TUG e o 6-CIT. Resultados: Na modalidade de jogo limpo a mediana do tempo aumenta de acordo com a dimensão das grelhas (S:7.67 - L: 14.50);correlações fortes foram encontradas entre o TUG e o tempo nas grelhas S (r=0.802) e L (r=0.808).A variabilidade entre tentativas é superior para a grelha Mpistas (1.53-20.67). Entre o 6-cit e o Spistas (0.580), Mlimpo (0.639) e Mpistas (0,636) foram detetadas correlações moderadas. Conclusão: Dificuldades de equilíbrio resultam num aumento de dificuldade no desempenho no jogo limpo. Algumas adaptações ao protocolo do Jogo podem ser determinantes para garantir condições de segurança na avaliação de dupla tarefa em idosos. Wearable displays may enhance information access, but potential interference between device use and the primary operational task may result. Multiple Resource Theory (2002) helps predict which information modalities will interfere, but in the case of head mounted displays (HMDs), the importance of competition for focal attention versus central processing resources in determining dual-task interference remains unclear. We investigated the interference between manual tracking and a word memory task, where words were presented on a HMD, the same display as the tracking task, or audibly. Compared to single-task tracking, performance was impaired by both audio and HMD word presentation, but not by words presented on the same visual plane. This suggests some interference is due to demands on vison itself, not just central resources, and that bottom-up shifts in information seeking may also impair performance. Future research into the best methods of utilizing wearable aids and directing user attention is needed.
