The industrial harvesting of sea buckthorn (SBT) berries with twigs and subsequent pruning creates a large volume of lignocellulosic agro-waste. This study aimed to valorize this agro-waste as a raw material for animal feed and fuel granules, for developing a sustainable cascading SBT production scheme. Five SBT cultivars’ biomasses were characterized by analytical pyrolysis, mass spectrometry, and GC analysis. Condensed tannins, which are undesirable components for animal feed, were separated by extraction. The residue was analyzed for total protein, vitamins (A, C, and E), ash, crude fat, wood fiber, and macroelements (P, K, Ca, and Na), and showed great potential. The heavy metal (Cd, Hg, and Pb) content did not exceed the permitted EU maximum. Granulation regimes were elaborated using a flat-die pelletizer, KAHL 14-175. The digestibility and the amount of produced gas emissions were determined using in vitro systems that recreate the digestion of small ruminants. The investigation proved that SBT leaves and stems are a unique underutilized source of animal feed, used alone or in combination with others. Twigs, due to their thorns, were granulated and valorized according to standards for application as fuel. The scheme offered in this study enables SBT agro-waste utilization and sustainable SBT berry production.

El alto valor nutritivo de las brásicas puede incrementar la productividad en los sistemas de producción de forrajes tradicionales. El objetivo del estudio fue comparar el valor nutricional y el rendimiento de materia seca (MS) y nutrientes entre brásicas forrajeras y especies tradicionales de otoño-invierno. Las brásicas forrajeras fueron Winfred, Hunter y rábano Graza y los forrajes tradicionales fueron avena, triticale, cebada, trigo y el trébol Alejandrino. El estudio se realizó en Matamoros, Coahuila, México en el ciclo 2018-2019, bajo un diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Se determinó la capacidad de rebrote, la composición nutricional del forraje y los rendimientos de MS y nutrientes. Todas las especies presentaron capacidad de rebrote, con tres cortes en trébol Alejandrino en 154 días, y con dos cortes en brásicas (150-154 días) y cereales (133-144 días). Las brásicas presentaron similar composición nutricional al trébol Alejandrino y mejor al de los cereales, principalmente por su mayor contenido de energía neta para lactancia (ENL; 6.57 a 7.32 MJ kg-1 MS). Los rendimientos de MS de las brásicas fueron similares a los observados en los forrajes tradicionales; sin embargo, por su alta composición nutricional las brásicas fueron iguales o superiores en producción de proteína cruda (PC) (1,608 a 2,986 kg ha-1) y ENL (62,819 a 84,044 MJ ha-1) a los forrajes tradicionales. En general, las brásicas forrajeras pueden incrementar el rendimiento de nutrientes respecto a los cereales y al trébol Alejandrino, especialmente en la producción de ENL (27.5 a 47.3 %).

The effectiveness of methane mitigation in ruminant livestock production systems depends on the accuracy of estimating methane emission factors and providing accurate emission inventories. Following the Paris Climate agreement, it is recommended that countries adopt the Tier-2 approach for estimating enteric methane emissions from ruminants instead of the Tier-1 approach currently used by most countries. This study sought to provide base line enteric methane emission estimates for the Tuli and Mashona Sanga cattle breeds in Zimbabwe using the IPCC Tier-2 model. Using animal characterization data collected from 412 cattle from Grasslands Research Institute and 406 cattle from Makoholi Research Institute, net energy requirements were estimated. From this and the estimate for digestibility, gross energy intake and dry matter intake were estimated. Gross energy intakes and the estimated methane conversion factor were used to estimate enteric methane emissions. Mean emission factors for Tuli were 45.1, 56, 28.5, 28.4, 20.6kg CH 4 /head/year for cows, bulls, heifers, steers and calves respectively. For Mashona, they were 47.8, 51.9, 29, 29.1 and 20.7kgCH 4 /head/year for cows, bulls, heifers, steers and calves respectively. Generally, estimated Tier-2 emission factors were significantly different from the IPCC Tier-1 default emission factors. This study concluded that enteric methane emission factors estimated using the IPCC Tier-2 model offer insights into the controversial use of the default IPCC Tier-1 emission factors.
