The effects of dietary sulfur amino acids on growth performance, intestinal morphology, enzyme activity, and nutrient transporters in weaning piglets1

Abstract: Early weaning results in intestinal dysfunction in piglets, while sulfur amino acids (SAA) are involved in improving intestinal functions. We tested a hypothesis that dietary supplementation with SAA can improve intestinal functions of weaning piglets and analyzed the effects of different dietary SAA levels on intestinal functions. A total of 80 piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) were weaned at 21 d of age and randomly assigned to one of the five diets that contained 0.53%, 0.63%, 0.74%, 0.85%, or 0.96% SA… Show more

“…On days 14 of experiment, the BW of piglets was determined after fasting overnight, collecting the blood and tissue sample from 9 piglets of each group according to the procedure (Yang, Xiong, et al, 2016). Piglets were disposed in the experiment as described (Zong et al, 2018). Then, the mesenterium peeled off, the small intestine (SI) and large intestine (LI) were taken out and their length measured used a ruler by fixing it vertically in the experimental table.…”

“…The pH value of gastrointestinal content (stomach, ileum, caecum and colon) was detected by the handheld pH meter. The intestinal sample were collected as described in the part of materials and methods (Zong et al, 2018). In this study, the intestinal sample were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde reagent to assess the intestinal morphology, and intestinal mucosa was treated to analyse mRNA expression of nutrients carriers and digestive enzyme activity.…”

“…The piglets were grouped by BW and gender and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups fed a diet of either low (0.53%) or high (0.85%) SAA levels for a 7-d period. These doses were based on the results of prior studies (Ettle et al, 2010;Zong et al, 2018). Experimental diets were formulated to meet NRC (2012) nutrient requirements (Table 1) except for SAA levels.…”

“…Although it is beyond the scope of functional amino acids, several indispensable amino acids, such as tryptophan and sulfur amino acids, have also attracted large attention recently (108)(109)(110). A growing evidence has revealed that supplementation of these amino acids beyond the current NRC requirement brought positive effects on intestinal health of weaned pigs by regulating host physiology, metabolism, oxidative status, and immunity (108)(109)(110). The modification of gut microbiota and their metabolites by these amino acids was also highly correlated to the enhanced gut barrier functions of weaned pigs (109).…”
