The effects of cryotherapy in relieving postarthroscopy pain

Abstract: Cryotherapy with ice in a plastic bag is a simple, readily attainable and cost-effective technique for relieving postarthroscopy pain. We recommend that it be included in standard treatment protocols. Techniques for cryotherapy should be incorporated into in-service education.

“…Cooling of the skin is simple and cheap form of anesthesia. The exact mechanism of action of anesthesia by cooling is unknown, but several mechanisms, such as decreased nerve conduction, reduction in muscle spasms, prevention of edema after injury, a decrease in the release of pain-production substances locally, release of endorphins, and pain inhibition through inhibitory interneurons (pain gate), have been suggested [5][6][7][8]. These neural effects increase the patient's pain threshold and can diminish the need for pharmacologic interventions, such as narcotics or local anesthetics.…”

“…[60][61][62][63] Evidence for cold therapy exists so far only in randomized controlled trials for a variety of surgical procedures, including hernia repair, A-V fistula creation, and dental surgery. 59,[64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72] Other methods also need further study even though they are endorsed by various institutions. 73,74 Lack of movement postoperatively can lead to muscle tightness and pain.…”

“…Hospital admission time can be shortened by using cryotherapy after THA (18), and because of its feasibility and cost-effectiveness standard use has been advocated (19,20). To our knowledge, no study has been performed in which cyclic cryotherapy and compression therapy have been combined.…”
