The effects of combined therapy of myo-inositol and D-chiro inositol in reduction of the individual components of metabolic syndrome in overweight PCOS patients compared to myo-inositol supplementation alone: a prospective randomised controlled trial

Abstract: Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorder affecting five to ten percent women of reproductive age group. Variability of signs and symptoms along with metabolic syndrome as one of the long term complications make it worthy of early diagnosis and treatment. Medical management of PCOS is aimed at the treatment of metabolic derangements, anovulation, hirsutism, and menstrual irregularities. Methods: 140 patients, using inclusion and exclusion criteria, were selected… Show more

“…In an animal model of diabetes, DP has been described as an anti-diabetic drug, with an insulin-like effect and the ability to enhance insulin activity by translocation of the GLUT in the mice skeletal muscles [52,63]. In patients with T2DM, treatment with pinitol improved glycemic control, decreased the level of adipocytokines, and decreased metabolic parameters associated with the risk of cardiovascular diseases [62]. In the cardiovascular system, DP was able to prevent diabetic-induced endothelial dysfunctions in the mesenteric artery.…”

“…Therefore, the choice of the initial dose of such drugs for research, experimentation, or clinical trials is a problem. It should be emphasized that widespread dose scaling based solely on body weight (mg/kg) is not an appropriate approach, because the biochemical and functional systems, particularly in pharmacokinetics, differ in different species [61,62].…”

“…[45][46][47][50][51][52] Compared to the MI group, the decrement of total testosterone and the increment of the serum sex hormone binding globulin were more relevant in MI+DCI group both at 3 month and at 6month. In both groups there was a striking improvement of the ovulation function.…”

“…Myo-inositol is a cyclic polyalcohol found in animals, plants, seeds, fungi and some bacteria [1]. Its benefits to human health include treatment and prevention of anxiety [2,3], dietary supplement for the promotion of female fertility [4], besides playing an important role in monitoring the treatment of cardiovascular diseases [5], Alzheimer [6], diabetes and renal disease [7].…”
