This is a report on a Research and Development project with the purpose of developing supplementary materials for building students' vocabulary in speaking in the hotel context for the tenth-grade students of the Hospitality Program at SMKN 3 Malang. The procedures were carried out in seven steps: (1) identifying the classroom problems, (2) reviewing recent theories of educational product development, (3) developing the educational products, (4) reviewing the product, (5) validating the products to experts and revised according to get quality assurance, (6) small scale try-out and revised based on the result of the try-out, and (7) publishing the final product. The students learn the vocabulary through three activities, namely watching the learning video (listening and repeating the dialog and knowing the vocabulary), doing the exercises, and reading the summary. The product provides six videos based on the basic competence of Introducing Oneself and Others, Congratulating and Complimenting Others, Expressing Intentions, Describing Tourism and Historical Places, and Giving Announcement. The context was adjusted to hospitality context. The validity result of this product is 95%, which means applicable and suitable.

Code-mixing of Chinese Language Learners in Second Language Acquisition

During the process of second language acquisition, language learners tend to use code-mixing as a learning strategy or a form of language transition. Among Chinese language learners, Chinese-English code-mixing is very common among language learners in classrooms and daily communication and many studies have been focused on this topic. By reviewing previous researches on Chinese peoples code-mixing in different situations, this paper attempts to find out the influence of code-mixing on Chinese language learners second language acquisition. It is found that code-mixing in the classroom is beneficial to both teachers and students, as code-mixing helps improve teaching efficiency and makes it comfortable for beginners to express themselves in class. In addition, code-mixing, not only in class, but also in other situations, facilitates second languages acquisition. Moreover, code-mixing does not have negative influence on Chinese peoples cultural identity and L1 ability. In conclusion, code-mixing is generally beneficial for Chinese language learners second language acquisition.

The aims of this study are to (1) explain the forms of mixed-use of L1 to L2 codes in social media posts, (2) explain the factors that cause the use of L1 to L2 mixed codes and (3) describe language mastery. This study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method. Data in code-mixing was obtained from secondary data, namely written posts with COVID-19 content on social media, Facebook and Twitter. A mixture of L1 and L2 codes in postings on social media includes words and phrases manifested in congruent insertion, change, and lexicalisation forms. The influencing factors are divided into (1) speaker factors, such as showing off, prestige, and language skills, and (2) linguistic factors, such as popular terms, topics, modes, speech partners, time and place/location. With the emergence of various terms related to COVID-19, the mastery of a second language for digital natives, in this case, English, is increasing. Although the use of code-mixing, there are some errors in writing, sentence structure, and cohesion, digital natives can master L2 through code-mixing, including accuracy of word writing, word selection, syntactic structure, cohesion, and coherence in the sentence.
