The effects of bioturbation and herbivory by the polychaete Nereis diversicolor on loss of saltmarsh in south‐east England

Abstract: Summary1. The saltmarshes of south-east England are eroding rapidly. Field and laboratory experiments were used to test the hypotheses that: (i) at the mudflat-saltmarsh boundary there are two alternative states, one dominated by pioneer zone vegetation that excludes burrowing infauna, and the other dominated by infaunal invertebrates that exclude vegetation; and (ii) the major cause of the loss of saltmarshes in south-east England is internal creek erosion, which is exacerbated by bioturbation and herbivory b… Show more

“…salinity, temperature, dehydration during low-tide air exposure). They have a range of feeding behaviours, including deposit feeding, grazing on microphytobenthos and macrophytes, filter feeding, scavenging and predation on other macro-and meiofauna (Vedel & Riisgård 1993, Paramor & Hughes 2004, Engelsen & Pihl 2008.…”

“…The study of these processes is of crucial importance to understand marsh functioning given that (1) many marshes are inhabited by bioturbators (e.g. Bertness 1985, Iribarne et al 1997, Paramor & Hughes 2004, Jefferies et al 2006; and (2) pioneer plants (such as S. perennis) play a key role in the dynamics of disturbancegenerated patches (Bertness & Ellison 1987) reducing physical stress and thus permitting the course of successions and closure of these patches (Bertness 1991, Pennings & Bertness 2001.…”

“…The polychaete Nereis diversicolor is found in Northern Europe and is an important source of mortality and erosion of Salicornia spp. salt marshes (Paramor & Hughes 2004, but see Morris et al 2004). And it has been suggested that they can delay the colonization of bare surfaces through seed burial (Paramor & Hughes 2005).…”
