The effects of auditory enrichment on zebrafish behavior and physiology

Abstract: Environmental enrichment is widely used to improve welfare and behavioral performance of animal species. It ensures housing of laboratory animals in environments with space and complexity that enable the expression of their normal behavioral repertoire. Auditory enrichment by exposure to classical music decreases abnormal behaviors and endocrine stress responses in humans, non-humans primates, and rodents. However, little is known about the role of auditory enrichment in laboratory zebrafish. Given the growing… Show more

“…By contrast, visual enrichment in the form of seascape backing paper, along with an artificial plant and upturned pot, increased aggression, but the effect, if any, of the backing paper is unknown (Woodward, Winder & Watt, 2019 ). Classical music as auditory enrichment resulted in zebrafish appearing less anxious in behavioural tests and had a positive effect on immune gene expression (Barcellos et al ., 2018 ). Together, these results suggest that auditory and visual stimulation may have potential as enrichment, although further research is needed to determine their merits and long‐term impacts.…”

“…Theirs encompass the frequency range of our voices (Fay & Popper 2000), and some, like haddock and saithe, produce calls in those ranges (Finstad & Nordeide 2004). Furthermore, in zebrafish, a model organism for neurosciences, musical enrichment has demonstrable effects, improving their welfare (Barcellos et al 2018).…”

“…There have been relatively few studies of enrichment for zebrafish within other sensory modalities. One study looked at the effect of auditory stimulation by exposing zebrafish to two hours of classical music daily for 15 days—zebrafish showed lower anxiety and increased activity than those exposed to no music, although cortisol levels did not differ [ 131 ]. However, this is the only study of its kind in zebrafish so far, so it is not known how other forms of music, or other sounds, may affect fish.…”
