The effects of ankle guards and taping on joint motion before, during, and after a squash match

Abstract: The effects of ankle guards and taping on joint motion before, during, and after exercise were studied. Twelve league squash players played two matches, each lasting 1 hour. Two different ankle guards, and two types of tape applied by the same method, served as supports. A specially designed goniometer with electronic digital display (accuracy 1 degree) was used to determine joint range of motion: plantar-flexion and dorsiflexion, neutral inversion and eversion, plantar-flexed inversion and eversion. The resul… Show more

“…Discussions with clinicians indicate that athletic tape is still commonly used to provide prophylactic support of the foot and ankle in spite of the results of previously reviewed research (8,12,14,15,18). O n e of the current investigators (GBW) has developed an athletic taping procedure for the foot and ankle.…”

“…Two custom-designed electric goniometers 27 were used to measure angular displacement of the ankle. A 2708 single-turn 10 KOhm potentiometer (Clarostat, Mexico City, Mexico) at each axis of rotation enabled the goniometer to measure range of motion to a tenth of a degree.…”

“…11,13,16 Many different methods have been proposed for accurate measurement of this theoretical position, which represents the midpoint between subtalar pronation and supination. In 1977, Root et al 15 proposed a method of calculating the STJN position from inversion and eversion of the subtalar joint using a protractor.…”
