The effects of a single bout of exercise on resting energy expenditure and respiratory exchange ratio

Abstract: We investigated the effects of a single bout of aerobic and resistance exercise of similar relative intensity and duration on resting energy expenditure (REE) and substrate utilisation. Ten young healthy males volunteered [age 22 (1.8) years, weight 76 (7.9) kg, height 176 (4.1) cm, percentage body fat 10.5 (4.0)%; mean (SEM)]. They randomly underwent three conditions in which they either lifted weights for 60 min at 70-75% of 1-RM (WL), ran for 60 min at 70-75% of maximal oxygen intake (R) or did not exercise… Show more

“…Moreover, we observed a non-significant approx. 20 % increase in whole-body fat oxidation rate after exercise, which did not reach statistical significance, perhaps due to type II error [15,52]; hence some of the excess NEFAs after exercise may be oxidized in peripheral tissues as well. Nevertheless, exercise-induced changes in total plasma TAG concentration [53] and VLDL-TAG concentration and kinetics [5] are independent of those in basal wholebody fat oxidation.…”

“…VPA increases EE, and may also be contributing independently to the lower %BF through a temporary increase in nutrient oxidation. Resting EE has been shown to be elevated post-exercise in young men; 30 this mechanism would favour a less positive energy balance (EB). Enhanced fat oxidation from activity diminishes fat available for storage into body depots, 30,31 and especially VPA increases oxidation of certain fats.…”

“…De fato, são diversos os estudos que constataram que o ECR pode melhorar a oxidação lipídica, independentemente da forma de treinamento (15,17,23,24,26,28) . Apenas os estudos de Jamurtas et al (36) e Melanson et al (18) não confirmaram esses achados. Sessões de ECR parecem ser compatíveis com um gasto calórico capaz de induzir alterações favoráveis na composição corporal.…”
