[1] A silver-iodide seeding agent was released, which may have resulted in enhanced precipitation over 100 km downwind from the point of release. This study attempts to determine whether this enhancement occurred. It is not possible to quantify the amount of precipitation that would have been released from an unseeded cloud if it has already been seeded, since no two clouds are alike. As a result, numerical models remain the best tool to investigate the effects of cloud seeding. We use a three-dimensional mesoscale cloud-resolving model, and we simulate seeding of a region with temperatures below 0°C in front of a target cloud that might lead to a change in cumulative precipitation far from the initial seeding area. Our model simulations show that this cloud seeding enhances cumulative precipitation 110 km from the center of mass of the initial seeding area by about 50%.Citation: Ć urić, M., D. Janc, and V. This study investigates the spatial and temporal characteristics of hail frequency in Serbia during the period 1949-2012. Two areas covering the whole territory of Serbia are treated: a complex terrain area (CTA) and a flat terrain area (FTA). Our research shows that the highest hail frequencies were found in the southwestern mountainous part of the country in the warm season. In the cold season, the area of maximum hail frequency lies in the region of the Sava and the Danube rivers. During the warm season, the highest hail frequencies are recorded in May and June and the smallest in August and September. This spatial pattern is influenced by the passages of the prevailing fronts, surface air temperatures and the convection enhancement by the mountains during the year. The trends of mean hail frequency are negative, except for the FTA in the dry season (August-September) and the cold season, in which nonparametric methods do not show any trends. The highest hail frequency area does not show any trend in the warm season, but interdecadal variability is significant. In general, the CTA has a greater mean hail frequency for all treated seasons. In contrast, the FTA has a greater maximum of mean hail frequency per station in the dry (August-September) and cold seasons. Although very small, the territory of Serbia also shows other peculiarities. In the last decade, the FTA has shown a strong positive trend of mean hail frequency as opposed to the CTA. This is due to the fact that the ridge of the Azores high extended over the CTA more frequently than before 2000.

We study herein the relationship between hailstorm vortex pair evolution and complex orography. In particular, the effects of differential heating are analysed to evaluate how they can affect the propagation of split hailstorms over complex terrain and impact on the spatial distribution of hail. For these reasons, this investigation is targeted at the characteristics of intense hailstorms over a particular area which is well-known as their source, as well as the hail point-frequency spatial distribution over such an area. The methods used include observations and a numerical cloud model. The investigations lead to the following findings.The key mechanism for a favoured right-moving split hailstorm under strong low-level directional shear is found. This is differential heating of the sunward and sunshaded sides of the valley. For this reason, stronger convection over the sunward side of the valley compared to that over its sunshaded side leads to a weaker vertical wind shear. In such a scenario, additional vertical vorticity components are generated that weaken the former existing vortices. The resulting effect is stronger weakening of the anticyclonic part of the cloud than its cyclonic counterpart. Finally, we have established the conceptual model of the vortex pair modified by differential heating.The other findings are as follows: the spatial distribution of the maximum values of hail point-frequency associated with air-mass hailstorms is well correlated with the tracks of split hailstorms. It shows the regular spatial pattern due to the corresponding cell-regeneration behaviour. As a consequence, hail point-frequency maxima more often occur in the valley than over the nearby areas. Hail point-frequency maximum locations associated with frontal clouds are more or less uniform in the along-line direction of a front.
