The Effects of a Megafire on Ecosystem Services and the Pace of Landscape Recovery

Abstract: (1) Background: Megafires have affected several regions in the world (e.g., Australia, California), including, in 2017, the central and south-central zones of Chile. These areas represent real laboratories to monitor the impacts on the sustainability of landscapes and their recovery after fires. The present research examines the modification of dynamics and the provision of ecosystem services by a megafire in a Mediterranean landscape in central Chile, combining remote sensing technologies and ecosystem servic… Show more

“…The natural landscape that can provide entertainment in Hebei is mainly grassland and forest, such as Aaihanba forest park, Fengning upper dam grassland, and Mulan paddock. NDVI is an important land vegetation ecosystem status parameter and can indicate vegetation coverage [48]. Therefore, this paper selects the annual NDVI composite value of the study area to replace the natural landscape recreation service [49] according to the availability and scientific nature of the data.…”

“…This is not only in regard to their distance from the lake shore, but also their conversion into a peri-urban space lacking in the instruments necessary for existence given the presence of two complex elements. The first is industrial exotic monoculture forestry operations, which pose a high risk of wildfires [66]. The second is the provision of only one access route on the outskirts of central Villarrica, a configuration that challenges any notion of road sustainability.…”

“…In several regions around the world, wildfires have historically occurred, even in areas with less prone climates, resulting in significant environmental impacts at many levels (BALCH et al, 2022;BLOEM et al, 2022;FERREIRA-LEITE et al, 2013b;JONES et al, 2022;KHARUK et al, 2021;MANCILLA-RUIZ et al, 2021;OLIVEIRA et al, 2014;ROCES-DÍAZ et al, 2022;SIMON, 2004;TYMSTRA et al, 2021;WANG et al, 2022). In recent decades, Europe has faced a high number of forest fires and an extensive burnt area, with distinct spatial and temporal patterns resulting from changes in the availability of fuel material and weather conditions (FERNANDES, 2013;FERNANDEZ-ANEZ et al, 2021;PEREIRA et al, 2013;PEREIRA et al, 2014;SANTOS et al, 2023;TEDIM et al, 2018;VIEIRA et al, 2023;VILAR et al, 2016).…”
