The effectiveness of two different exercise approaches in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A single-blind, randomized-controlled trial

Abstract: Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of two different types of exercise methods in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Methods In total, 28 subjects with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with a mild curve magnitude (10°–26°) were randomly divided into two groups: the Schroth group (n = 14) and the core group (n = 14). The patients in the Schroth group were treated with supervised Schroth exercises, and the patients in the core group were treated with supervised core stab… Show more

“…An overview of randomized and nonrandomized controlled clinical trials over the past 5 years is presented in Table 2 and Table 3 . Eight publications [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ] examined the effectiveness of Schroth, four [ 39 , 45 , 46 , 47 ] examined SEAS, one [ 48 ] examined BSPTS, and one [ 25 ] examined FED using the FITS methodology in the control group. In other studies, observation, traditional physiotherapy, Pilates exercises, core stabilization exercises, or corset wear without physical exercise intervention were used in the control groups.…”

“…Among the most recent controlled clinical trials ( Table 3 ), six recorded a change in ATR [ 37 , 38 , 41 , 43 , 45 , 46 ]. In two trials, in which bracing was used in the control group, no statistically significant changes in ATR were observed [ 41 , 46 ].…”

“…Farklı egzersiz metotlarıyla yapılan çalışmalarda Schroth ve pilates egzersizleri karşılaştırıldığında, Schroth egzersizlerinin Cobb açısı, gövde rotasyon açısı, spinal mobilite, yaşam kalitesi ve vücut ağırlık dağılımı üzerinde pilates egzersizlerine göre daha anlamlı sonuç verdiği kaydedilmiştir (20,21).…”
