The effectiveness of trauma care systems at different stages of development in reducing mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Background Traumatic injury remains the leading cause of death, with more than five million deaths every year. Little is known about the comparative effectiveness in reducing mortality of trauma care systems at different stages of development. The objective of this study was to review the literature and examine differences in mortality associated with different stages of trauma system development. Method A systematic review of peer-reviewed populat… Show more

“…This study further supports the potential benefits of establishing and developing a national trauma system in SA [9]. The introduction of national or regional trauma systems in North American [38,39], European [18,40], Asian [41,42], and Oceanian countries [38,43] has resulted in significant reductions in trauma-related mortality [44]. The difference in the mortality rate between KSMC, a developing trauma center, and the other two hospitals further supports this argument.…”

“…The mortality was 5,754 cases in 2019 and 4,618 cases in 2020, which further shows that the burden of road traffic injury was significant even during the country-wide lockdown [ 26 ]. Given that an all-inclusive trauma system plays an essential part in decreasing mortality arising from road injuries [ 27 , 28 ], there are opportunities to extend and strengthen the trauma care system in Saudi Arabia [ 9 ]. Moreover, injury prevention needs a robust community programme and legislation around road safety measures, including strict enforcement that can decrease the burden of traumatic injuries in the country.…”

“…Trauma systems have been found to be effective in decreasing mortality especially as the trauma system matures 9,10,18,19 . Maturation of trauma systems appears to occur approximately 10 years after creation 9,18 .…”
