Aim This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the group Reminiscence Therapy (RT) on cognition, depressive symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) in older adults recruited in nursing homes. Methods A pilot study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted between September 2017 and March 2018 in five nursing homes from central Portugal. A comprehensive RT program (Core program followed by a Follow-up program) was provided to clinically stable volunteers aged 65 years or more, who did not have severe cognitive impairment. Results From the 50 older adults (32 women and 18 men, with mean age of 83.32±7.76, and mean education level of 5.48±4.05) considered eligible to participate in the study, 35 (mean age: 84.17±7.46, mean education level of 6.14±4.49) completed the Core Program and 28 completed the Follow-up Program (mean age: 84.25±7.66, mean education level of 6.18±4.57). Based on the Wilcoxon Test, it was observed that the participants’ cognitive performance did not change during the two RT programs. No significant changes were confirmed in relation to depressive symptomatology and QOL. Conclusion Although no statistically significant improvements of the older adults’ cognitive function, depressive symptomatology, and quality of life were found, the stabilization of such outcomes are relevant from a clinical viewpoint. Further studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

O aumento expressivo do número de idosos é um acontecimento global, que vêm ocorrendo de maneira constante. Dados remontam que essa população se aproximará de 2 bilhões de pessoas até 2050. Associado a esse crescimento, sintomas depressivos e a depressão, propriamente dita, revelam preocupação com uma epidemia incidente, principalmente no grupo etário dos idosos, que costumeiramente negligencia os sintomas com a crença de serem inerentes ao processo natural do envelhecimento. O presente estudo é uma revisão integrativa da literatura e teve como objetivo demonstrar a importância da atenção primária à saúde na detecção de sintomas depressivos em idosos, conhecer os agravos relacionados com os sintomas, identificar o melhor instrumento para detecção precoce da problemática e descrever as terapêuticas empregadas nos idosos com sintomas depressivos. A busca foi realizada nas bases de dados eletrônicas SCIELO, LILACS e BIREME, incluindo trabalhos publicados entre 2011 e 2019, em língua portuguesa. A seleção dos estudos, extração de dados e validação foram realizadas de forma independente por dois autores, obtendo amostra de 37 artigos. Constatou-se, através dos dados analisados, os principais métodos utilizados para rastreio dos sintomas depressivos, comorbidades mais associadas relatados na literatura e os principais métodos abordados para tratamento. Assim, foi possível estruturar de forma sistemática os relatos mais recentes da problemática na atenção primária à saúde e lançar base para elucidação, escolha e possível padronização dos métodos de rastreio.

Effectiveness of Reminiscence Therapy versus Cognitive Stimulation Therapy in Older Adults with Cognitive Decline: A Quasi-Experimental Pilot Study

Cognitive impairment can represent a predecessor to neuro-degenerative processes; however, evidence suggests that non-pharmacologic interventions such as reminiscence therapy (RT) and cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) can potentially stabilize or reverse this trend. Community-based settings are widely regarded as the key area of intervention by healthcare professionals in this field. Thus, this study aimed to assess the effects of an RT and a CST program in the cognition, depressive symptomatology, and quality of life (QoL) of older adults with cognitive decline who attend community support structures (CSS) in central Portugal. A quasi-experimental study with two arms (RT and CST program) was conducted for seven weeks. Participants were allocated to each arm based on the CSS they attended. Of the 109 older adults initially screened, 76 completed the intervention (50 in the RT program and 26 in the CST program). A pre- and post-intervention analysis showed statistically significant differences in older adults’ cognition, especially in their delayed recall ability, in both groups. Older adults in the RT program evidence improved QoL scores post-intervention. Both the RT and CST programs implemented throughout the study are beneficial to older adults’ cognitive performance, although results are more pronounced in the earlier stages of cognitive decline. Participation in the RT program was associated with improvements in older adults’ QoL scores.
