Abstract:In 2012, the European Union introduced two optional quality terms (OQT) as new tools for the enhancement of food products. Two years later, the requirements for the use of the OQT "mountain product" were defined to enhance agricultural production in harsh environments, such as mountain areas. This new tool aimed at promoting local development, maintaining the economic activities in mountain areas and redistributing wealth. The present research aims at understanding if farmers perceived this tool as useful and evaluates their level of awareness. To this aim, a sample of 68 traditional cheese producers from the North West Alpine Arch was interviewed. The results show that some cheese producers have a positive attitude towards the concepts set out in the OQT "mountain product" and consider it a useful tool to promote and enhance their products. Some critical elements are also discussed.

Abstract:One of the most evident elements of the agricultural crisis is farm abandonment in many marginal rural areas, such as mountains. Some traits of mountain agriculture such as remoteness, low productivity, extreme weather and small farm size, can limit the adaptation and the competitiveness of this branch. The analysis aims to assess the consumers' Willingness to Pay (WTP) for permanence of the upland farms and mountain pastures, by a Contingent Valuation analysis. The main results are that a WTP for the redevelopment of the pastures exists and that the personal characteristics of the sample are more influential than the opinions of the individuals on WTP. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that consumers seem to prefer an agricultural orientation of the upland farms rather than a touristic one. In the conclusion section, some policy guidelines are proposed.

TöröK áron-maró zalán márK a földrajzi árujelzők gazdaságtanaaz empirikus bizonyítékok A mezőgazdasági termékek és élelmiszerek előállítási helyükkel való összekapcsolása nem új keletű dolog, az Európai Unió közel három évtizede rendelkezik ilyen regiszterrel. A Magyarországon 2015-ben elindult Eredetvédelmi Program célja az, hogy ezek között az Európai Unió által is elismert kiváló termékek között a magyar élelmiszerek száma jelentősen növekedjen, illetve a már benne lévő termékek jobban tudjanak profitálni a rendszer által biztosított előnyökből. A tanulmány szisztematikus szakirodalom-feldolgozás keretében térképezte fel azt, hogy az empirikus bizonyítékok alapján mire számíthatnak a jelenlegi és leendő magyar földrajzi árujelzős termékek piacméretük, árprémiumuk és vidékfejlesztésre gyakorolt hatásuk tekintetében. A nemzetközi szakirodalom módszeres átvizsgálásával megállapítható, hogy a magyar termékek inkább számíthatnak a már meglévő, jellemzően helyi piacaik megőrzésére, semmint hogy rövid távon jelentős (export)piacokat tudjanak meghódítani az eredetvédelem segítségével. A termelői árak növekedése is csak hosszabb távon várható, elsősorban a magasabb hozzáadott értékű feldolgozott termékek esetében. Egy tudatosan felépített és kiterjesztett vidékfejlesztési stratégia részeként a földrajzi árujelzők közvetlen és közvetett módon egyaránt hozzájárulhatnak az előállítási helyszín fejlesztéséhez.* Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) kód: Q10, Q13, Q18.
