The effectiveness of exercise as an intervention in the management of depression: systematic review and meta-regression analysis of randomised controlled trials

Abstract: Objective To determine the effectiveness of exercise as an intervention in the management of depression. Design Systematic review and meta-regression analysis of randomised controlled trials obtained from five electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Sports Discus, PsycLIT, Cochrane Library) and through contact with experts in the field, bibliographic searches, and hand searches of recent copies of relevant journals. Main outcome measures Standardised mean difference in effect size and weighted mean difference i… Show more

“…A secondary purpose was to examine the relationship between PA and the specific SWB constructs (for example, life satisfaction) that have been most studied in the SCI and PA literature. Consistent with research in the general and clinical populations, for example references, [6][7][8]14 it was hypothesized that PA and SWB would be positively related. A third purpose was to examine study design as a moderator of the PA-SWB relationship to determine if it can account for inconsistencies in the existing literature.…”

“…18 This definition encompasses all types of activity (for example, occupational activity, activities of daily living, sports, exercise). However, for the purpose of our meta-analysis and consistent with other meta-analyses conducted in the PA domain, 6 we focused on studies that examined participation in sport (both competitive and noncompetitive) and other activities that are carried out to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness (that is, aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, body composition and flexibility).…”

“…For example, researchers undertaking a meta-analysis into the effectiveness of exercise in the management of depression were unable to draw any conclusion due to the methodological weaknesses of all 14 studies under analysis. 41 Unfortunately, many published qualitative studies are also of poor quality and lacking in rigour. 24 Therefore, as part of the process of the meta-synthesis, the quality of relevant studies was evaluated using predetermined criteria.…”

“…However, both pharmacological treatment [25] and psychoeducation [26,27] appear to be promising as treatment for mild depression and for improving glycaemic control in these patients. Physical activity has been demonstrated to alleviate depressive symptoms in the non-diabetic population as efficiently as cognitive behavioural therapy [28]. Lack of exercise in diabetic patients is associated with 72% to 75% higher likelihood of being depressed [29].…”
