The Effectiveness of Cupping Therapy on Relieving Chronic Neck and Shoulder Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: The research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cupping therapy (CT) in changes on skin surface temperature (SST) for relieving chronic neck and shoulder pain (NSP) among community residents. A single-blind experimental design constituted of sixty subjects with self-perceived NSP. The subjects were randomly allocated to two groups. The cupping group received CT at SI 15, GB 21, and LI 15 acupuncture points, and the control group received no intervention. Pain was assessed using the SST, visual analog sc… Show more

“…8 Cupping therapy has been shown to increase blood flow to the desired area, by causing rupture of capillaries on the skin surface. 8,10 This is thought to increase blood flow to injured area and help in the healing process by bringing oxygenated blood and nutrients to the damaged tissue.…”

“…In today's times, glass cups are used so that the therapist can monitor the condition of the skin. 8,10 An alternative method of cupping used is medical grade silicone cups because of their pliability. This therapy can cause redness at the treatment area in addition to some amounts of swelling when the vacuum draws blood and fluids under the treatment space.…”

“…McKenzie's [14] cervical exercise is expected to be effective in correcting posture of the neck, and exercise can indirectly reduce stress and chronic myalgia previously experienced by the patient. Many of the therapists have developed cupping therapy for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders through diverse studies that expected to be a new trend in the field of sports medicine when applied in conjunction with movement patterns or functional exercises [10].…”

“…Applying cupping therapy increases the threshold for immediate pressure pain, accelerates the removal of waste and toxins from the body, and stimulates metabolism, resulting in vasodilation and devoted blood circulation. This has been shown to be effective for muscle relaxation and chronic neck pain [10].…”

“…According to these results, it appears that therapeutic interventions using electrical stimulation on elderly patients with dementia have an effect on their gait and balance abilities. Among many electrical treatments, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) not only decreases pain according to gait control theory, but also decreases pain sensitivity by activating the descending inhibitory system [10]. Both sides of the anterior cingulated cortex of the ipsilateral supplementary motor area are activated by activating the parietal lobe of the cerebrum and the first and second somatic sensory cortices when TENS is applied [11].…”
