“…Analysis of the pattern of hospitalizations into the new community behavioral hospitals in the rural areas shows an annual admission rate of 32% which increases to 50.4% per year for this population when admission to regular hospitals are added. These admission rates are similar to those found in the 10 year CSP study by Husted, Wentler, Long-henry, & Allen (2000) and the initial 2006 study (Husted & Wentler). Since these studies provide data prior to the closing of regional treatment centers, it may be concluded that the percentage decrease found in this study is determined at least in part by the effectives of living in the foster home alone.…”

“…Relapse continues to be a problem with individuals with schizophrenia and related conditions (Dharwadkar, 1991), Husted (2004). Even in a state like Minnesota with a long history of excellent programs serving individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, the rate of rehospitalization was over 30% per year in 1999 (Husted, et al, 2000), and 50.4% in 2008 (Minnesota Dept. of Human Services, 2009) in the area of western Minnesota investigated in the present manuscript (Minnesota Dept.…”

“…Using these criteria, we identified three studies of rural intensive case management (35)(36)(37), and we added one study (38) that could be described as assertive community treatment that did not meet our assertive community treatment criteria. As before, we selected only the studies that used a true experimental design.…”

“…Dixon, 2000;Marshall & Lockwood, 2004;Ziguras & Stuart, 2000). Similarly, CSP has shown effectiveness at reducing hospitalization rates, days in the hospital, and improve general recovery (Canadian Mental Health Association, 2003;Husted et al, 1994Husted et al, , 2000National Institute of Mental Health, 2000). Additionally, there have been movements to simultaneously introduce other evidence-based practices that have helped those with SMI along with the ACT and CSP model and other practices that have emerged since the introduction of ACT and CSP (between the 1990s and early 2000s).…”
