The effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for tinnitus: a randomized controlled trial using 99mTc-ECD SPECT

Abstract: • Efficacy of acupuncture on brain perfusion and symptoms of tinnitus patients. • Acupuncture improved the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory scores in tinnitus patients. • No significant changes in brain perfusion were observed after 12 twice-weekly sessions. • Perfusion changes would reflect changes in neuronal function.

“…2,8 For example, in a randomized controlled study by Laureano et al, the efficacy of acupuncture therapy for patients with tinnitus was compared based on the THI scores of treated and untreated groups, and a statistically significant decrease was observed after treatment compared to the baseline values. 11 In another study including 50 patients with tinnitus, 8 the severity of the disease was monitored using the THI. The authors of that study reported that the THI score of the acupuncture group was reduced from 56 at baseline to 28 after treatment.…”

“…Some studies have found that electroacupuncture stimulation of ST25 significantly reduces glucose metabolism in the left cingulate gyrus, right insula, right parahippocampal gyrus, anterior fascicle and right caudate nucleus in patients with GI dysfunction. It was found that bilateral thalamic blood flow decreases significantly after electroacupuncture therapy, indicating that the mechanism of action of electroacupuncture therapy on IBS is related to the decrease in blood flow in specific brain regions [36]. In previous studies, this team has also found that in healthy volunteers after electroacupuncture, ST36 magnetoencephalography reveals that acupuncture stimulation on the foot three mile point leads to a wide range of the cerebral cortex and that the limbic system and subcortical area signal continues to increase, which can directly affect the CNS [12] .…”
