The effect on pain of three different nonpharmacological methods in peripheral intravenous catheterisation in adults

Abstract: It is important that nurses should be aware of pain and stress experienced by patients during invasive procedures. For this reason, nurses should have knowledge of proven nonpharmacological methods which can reduce pain to a minimum.

“…In the study of Vr, Agnihotri, Sukhpal, and Bhalla (), in which the effect of valsalva manoeuver mechanism on pain was examined during the application of PIC, the pain score of the experimental group was found to be significantly lower than the control group. Yilmaz and Gunes () found that the techniques of squeezing a stress ball, blowing into a spirometer and in particular coughing are effective in reducing pain associated with the PIC insertion.…”

“…In the literature, there are fewer studies using nonpharmacological interventions to reduce the pain of PIC insertion than studies using drugs for this purpose (Aygun et al, 2013;Suren et al, 2013;Yilmaz & Gunes, 2018;Zempsky et al, 2016). Most of the studies were performed in healthy adults (Aygun et al, 2013).…”

“…Also, Valsalva maneuver was found to reduce pain during VP as effectively as the application of the eutectic mixture of local anesthetics [27]. In a recent study of Yilmaz and Güneş, where Valsalva maneuver, rubber ball squeezing, and CT were examined regarding their hypoalgesic effects during peripheral intravenous catheterization, CT was found to exert the strongest reduction in pain [28]. In contrast to other nonpharmacological methods, CT does not require any * n.s.…”
