The effect of VIATOP plus FEP on the stiffness and low temperature behaviour of hot mix asphalts

Abstract: the trade-off regarding stiffness and low-temperature behaviour of hot mix asphalt (HmA) mixes is well known -the higher the stiffness of an asphalt mix is, the lower its relaxation during fast cooling down in winter, resulting in thermal cracking at higher winter temperatures. the accumulated tensile stress together with the stress deriving from heavy traffic load leads to severe transverse cracking of the pavement. the German company j. rettenmaier & söhne has developed several fibre based pellet additives i… Show more

“…The optimum use of plastic can be 10% and 15% of bitumen based on Marshal Stability test (K. Sandhiya, 2018). Performance of roads depends highly on the quality of its components, especially the type and quality of the bitumen and aggregate properties since it determines the most important properties of the asphalt mix (Toth, 2015) . Methods used to attain a higher performance road are duly by improving the quality of bitumen which is done by modifying the rheological properties of bitumen by blending it with various products such as plastics and rubber (Vasudevan, 2006).…”

“…This type of pellets designed for HMA wearing courses of heavy traffic load roads, improving pavement performance through superior binder property. It improves stiffness of the mix while somewhat improving low temperature behaviour as well [4]. Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material is the output of milling of bituminous layers during pavement rehabilitation.…”

“…Miscellaneous fiber types, such as glass, carbon, polyester and those of aramid origin, have high strength and stiffness and can be used for the modification of asphalt pavements. Some properties of hot mix asphalts, which are stiffness, resistance against low temperature and plastic deformation behavior, can be enhanced via cellulose fiber and elastomeric chemicals containing special additives [7]. Despite improved performance characteristics, increasing economic and environmental requirements in today's conditions have led researchers to develop new fiber materials.…”
