Green spaces have been proved to have a positive effect on traffic noise pollution in the local scale; however their effects have not been explored on the urban level. This paper investigates the effects of green space-related parameters from a land cover viewpoint on traffic noise pollution in order to understand to what extent greener cities can also be quieter. A triple level analysis was conducted in the agglomeration, urban and kernel level including various case study cities across Europe. The green space parameters were calculated based on land cover data available in a European scale, while traffic noise data were extracted from online noise maps and configured in noise indices. In the first level 25 agglomerations were investigated, six of which were further analyzed in the urban and kernel levels. It was found that the effect of green spaces on traffic noise pollution varies according to the scale of analysis. In the agglomeration level, there was no significant difference in the cluster of the higher green space index and the percentage of people exposed in the lowest (55-59 dB(A)) or the highest noise band of more than 70 dB(A). In the urban level it was found that lower noise levels can possibly be achieved in cities with a higher extent of porosity and green space coverage. Finally, in the kernel level a Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis was conducted for the identification of correlations between noise and green. Strong correlations were identified between 60% and 79%, while a further cluster analysis combined with land cover data revealed that lower noise levels were detected in the cluster with higher green space coverage. At last, all cities were ranked according to the calculated noise index.

The dilemma of simultaneously promoting the advantages of urban densification and urban liveability, namely the environmental and social benefits of urban green spaces, has been widely acknowledged in the research literature. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current state of evidence on benefits, conflicts and challenges emerging from fostering both urban densification and urban greening aims. A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was conducted. Searches for peer-reviewed papers were conducted in Scopus and Web of Science. Our search yielded an initial 357 papers, which were then further sorted and screened to the 117 manuscripts retained and included in this review. The authors systematized the multiple perspectives in which the interactions between urban densification and urban greening have been explored. Moreover, the results revealed a lack of clear agreement about the existence or not of conflicts emerging from fostering both urban densification and urban greening aims, suggesting that the positive or negative interactions are not absolute but depend on the scale or the context on which the studies are conducted. Further research should explore multiple potential mediating variables (e.g., the mediator effect of scale and context) to deepen our understanding of interactions between density and greening.

O objetivo da presente pesquisa é analisar as possíveis implicações da mobilidade urbana na Avenida Presidente Vargas, na cidade de Passo Fundo/RS-Brasil, em relação as variáveis diversidade e densidade urbana entre os anos de 2001 e 2020. O espaço urbano necessita de investimentos em infraestrutura para atender as demandas de circulação de veículos motorizados, no sentido de mitigar os congestionamentos, emissões de gases poluentes, poluição sonora e acidentes de trânsito. Neste contexto, torna-se notório fatores que influenciam de forma positiva e negativa no uso dos veículos motorizados e na mobilidade urbana, principalmente em escala local. Para o desenvolvimento dessa pesquisa foram realizados levantamento in loco, objetivando na construção de mapas temáticos que auxiliam na compreensão do urbano. Os resultados obtidos reforçam a análise da mobilidade urbana em seus diversos fatores que a influenciam, demonstrando a importância de se compreender a dinâmica urbana como um todo, aprimorando as tomadas de decisões. A análise construtiva atual dessa avenida demostra que as edificações aumentaram 51,30% em relação ao ano de 2001, mas mantendo a predominância de edificações residenciais mesmo com o aumento de usos de comércio/serviço e misto, favorecendo o acréscimo do número de veículos motorizados na avenida e comprometendo o fluxo viário.
