The effect of upper eyelid blepharoplasty on eyelid and brow position

Abstract: This article evaluates the effect of upper eyelid blepharoplasty on eyelid margin position and brow height. This study is a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent upper eyelid blepharoplasty without concurrent blepharoptosis repair or brow surgery. The medical records of the participants were retrospectively reviewed and an established image analysis software was used to quantify the upper margin reflex distance (MRD1) as well as brow height using high quality standardized clinical photographs. A tot… Show more

“…Only a few authors have studied the brow position after blepharoplasty. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] Frankel and Kamer compared postoperative brow position after upper blepharoplasty to brow position in the control group, which included subjects who had not undergone blepharoplasty or any other surgery that could have affected brow measurement. This study included 54 patients in the treatment group and 28 patients in the control group; no significant difference was observed in brow height between patients who had undergone blepharoplasty and those who had not.…”

“…There was no description of orbicularis oculi muscle treatment. 29 Troilius found a descent of the brow height after blepharoplasty, but have not described the amount or if the orbicularis muscle was resected. He blamed the decrease on the frontal muscle activity when the weight of the heavy eyelid skin is removed.…”

“…Recognition and elimination of eyebrow ptosis may eliminate the need for blepharoplasty by providing stretching of the upper eyelid skin upwards. Performing blepharoplasty alone in individuals with eyebrow ptosis causes an increase in eyelid ptosis and may lead to a worse cosmetic appearance by converging the eyelash margin and eyebrow (9)(10)(11). Correction of eyebrow ptosis is more important especially in asymmetric cases, because blepharoplasty without correction of eyebrow ptosis would render eyebrow asymmetry more prominent (2).…”

“…This study shows that eyelids must be examined in detail. Also, it is a helpful study about eliminating false ptosis [9]. When the treatment is planned, patient should be looked as a whole.…”
