The effect of ultrasound pretreatment on some selected physicochemical properties of black cumin (Nigella Sativa)

Abstract: Background: In the present study, the effects of ultrasound pretreatment parameters including irradiation time and power on the quantity of the extracted phenolic compounds quantity as well as on some selected physicochemical properties of the extracted oils including oil extraction efficiency, acidity and peroxide values, color, and refractive index of the extracted oil of black cumin seeds with the use of cold press have been studied. Methods: For each parameter, three different levels (30, 60, and 90 W) for… Show more

“…Farzaneh et al demonstrated the comprehensive screening systems to research bioactive compound in medicinal plants [58]. Interestingly, they have reported novel modeling in which extraction efficiency and biological activity of target compounds could be increased by microwave irradiation or ultrasound treatment [59][60][61][62]. Recently, there has been a universal propensity to application of natural phytochemicals because of existence of substituents with bioactive potentials, well-being advantages, and functional ingredients [63].…”

“…To this purpose, light absorbance of the oil was measured at wavelengths of 460, 550, 620, and 670 nm. Then, the color index was measured through the following equation in lovibond yellow color (Moghimi et al., 2018):Colorindex=1.29A460+69.7A550+41.2A62056.4A670…”

“…The use of ultrasound has been recognized for its potential for industrial application through processes that can increase extraction yield, quality of extracted oil, process safety, and reduce extraction time. The efficiency of this technique has been attributed to ultrasound wave propagation and cavitation phenomena [28].…”
