External colouration in animals depends on the interaction of several different factors including the genetics and epigenetics processes that underlie the colour expression, the mechanisms of colour perception, and the general mechanisms controlling colour evolution and function. Among all, camouflage from predators and conspicuousness are of particular interest since pose animal to choose between opposite adjustment in colouration. The external colouration of crustaceans is mainly due to the accumulation of carotenoids in the exoskeleton and the epidermal layer, and the trade-off between camouflage and communication had lead to a variety of responses, involving signal partitioning, spectral sensibility, changing colouration or signalling behaviour. Here, we used digital images to explore intrapopulation variability of the external colouration of Pacifastacus leniusculus among body regions within an individual and between sexes. We found that i) ventral colouration of claws are more saturated and brilliant than upperparts, ii) males express a more saturated and brightness colouration than females, especially on the lower portion of claws, iii) colour intensity and brightness increases with size differently in different body regions, and iv) brightness is more variable in males than in females. All the above patterns support the hypothesis that colour in this species could be the result of a compromise between camouflage from predators and conspicuousness for communication. The results of this study suggest that carotenoid might have something to do with intraspecific communication and perform more complex functions than that of a simple pigment.

Colour plays a critical role in reproductive performance and egg quality in the crustacean. This study was designed to compare the reproductive performance, egg quality, colour, carotenoids, proximate, and fatty acid composition of purple and greenblack Eriocheir sinensis. The results showed that the survival rate, egg production, fecundity and reproductive effort for purple females were slightly higher than greenblack females, but not significant. The egg diameter, wet weight and dry weight of individual egg were similar between purple and greenblack. There was no significant difference for lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*), colour difference (dE*), and total carotenoids content between purple and greenblack eggs. Purple eggs had a significantly higher astaxanthin and lutein than greenblack at 1 week (p < 0.05), while lower lutein content in purple eggs at 4 weeks (p < 0.05). The eggs produced by purple female had the significant higher C20:5n3 (EPA) than that of greenblack female. In conclusion, the astaxanthin and EPA content of purple were significantly higher than those of greenblack, but the reproductive performance, eggs colour and proximate composition were similar, which suggested that purple E. sinensis may have better high‐quality egg than greenblack E. sinensis.

Marbled crayfish / marmorkrebs, parthenogenetically reproducing decapod crustacean of pet aquarium origin conventionally has been recognized as an undesirable species since it a) is an invasive pest dangerous for aquatic ecosystem resources because of its hardiness, omnivorousness, fast growth, self-cloning abilities; b) has little commercial value for food industry. However, recently an idea has been introduced about marmorkrebs as a promising cheap protein source, which can help to fight world hunger. Accordingly, research performed at Liepaja University (Latvia) was focused on marbled crayfish farming system design issues. Research paper presented discusses marmorkrebs survival capacities in small-volume microcosm tanks (made from recycled material), under harsh abiotic conditions. Pilot research results obtained will be used to develop experimental project on low-input microcosmic indoor aquaculture for marmorkrebs.
