The effect of three‐monthly albendazole treatment on Th2 responses: Differential effects on IgE and IL‐5

Abstract: Helminth parasites induce a strong Th2 response, characterized by high levels of IgE and elevated signature cytokines such as IL-5. As many global deworming programmes are underway, there is concern that this might lead to emergence of Th1-mediated pathologies when the counterbalancing helminth-induced Th2 response is absent. Therefore, we assessed the effect of deworming on Th2-mediated responses in a household-clustered randomized controlled trial in Indonesia. Total plasma IgE and whole-blood IL-5 responses… Show more

“…These findings are in agreement with our previous results which showed that albendazole treatment leads to a decrease in total IgE levels [27-29]. Likewise, a school-based cluster-randomized study in Ecuador observed a strong association between total IgE and STH infection but not with age, nutritional, or socioeconomic status, suggesting that STH infection is an important determinant of total IgE [30].…”

“…In epidemiological studies, low SES has been associated with poorer hygiene practices which in turn could increase exposure to other microorganism or parasites . Infections with parasitic helminths are known to induce a strong Th‐2 immune response that can lead to elevated levels of IgE . In the current study, we found no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of current helminth infections between mothers with low and high SES; however, the levels of tIgE in mothers/newborns with low SES were significantly higher than mothers/newborns with high SES.…”

“…All children were offered treatment after the initial trial, and therefore potentially all of these children received treatment for deworming. Appraised in a separate systematic review by Jullien 2016 and classified as high risk of bias and excluded.de Ruiter 2017No relevant outcomes.Diouf 2002Intervention comprised mebendazole, vitamin A, and iron supplementation and metronidazole as a combined intervention versus placebo.Evans 1986Treatments randomized, but some placebo groups accessed treatment. Analysis was by the treatment received, and randomization was ignored (included in the Dickson 2000a Cochrane Review).Fernando 1983Two villages allocated to treatment or no treatment on the basis of a coin toss.…”
