Objective This study aimed to assess the impact of monolithic zirconia thickness on its color properties after different surface finishing and polishing procedures, and following aging in coffee solution. Materials and methods Two types of monolithic zirconia brands [Prettau Anterior (PA) and DD Cubex2 (DDC)] with three different thicknesses: 0.5, 1, and 1.5, and 10 mm diameter were tested. The color properties were evaluated after various surface finishing procedures (glazing, adjusting with burs + glaze, polishing, adjusting with burs + polishing) and after 5,000 cycles in a coffee solution were evaluated. The differences in color (ΔE) and translucency, were calculated and statistically analyzed by three‐way ANOVA and pairwise comparison (α = 0.05). Results The brand, material thickness, and surface finishing protocol before and after coffee thermocycling had significant effect on color variations (p < 0.001). For translucency, 3‐way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between the material thickness and surface finishing protocol following aging in coffee solution (p < 0.001), however no significant interaction was observed following the surface finishing protocols (p = 0.247). Conclusions The optical properties of monolithic zirconia ceramics can be influenced by the material brand, material thickness and the procedure of surface finishing and polishing. Clinical significance Clinicians should take into consideration the potential change of the color properties of monolithic zirconia restorations following both contouring and occlusal adjustment procedures and coffee intake.

Purpose: To investigate colour agreement between different shades of Panavia V5 resin cement and their try-in pastes under zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics. Methods: Forty-four zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic specimens were prepared at 0.8 AE 0.01 mm thickness. Composite resin tooth-shaded background specimens were obtained in two shades. Resin cement specimens were fabricated at 0.1-mm thickness. Colour difference values (ΔE) between Aquagel and both the try-in paste and resin cement were calculated using the CIE-Lab system. The CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) colour formula was used to determine colour differences. The three-way ANOVA test and a multiple comparisons test were used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the ΔE00 values obtained from the cement shade colour measurements for all specimens (P < 0.05). According to the three-way ANOVA test, lower ΔE00 values were observed in the try-in paste group compared to the resin cement group. The ΔE00 values were significantly affected by the cement shade and tooth-shaded background (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The colour agreement between the try-in pastes and the corresponding resin cement differed, and the try-in pastes could not mask the dark dental background as much as the corresponding resin cement.

INTRODUCION: Ultra translucent zircônia (5Y-PSZ) has superior optical properties compared to conventional ceramic systems, providing a wide application in aesthetic dentistry. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to present relevant information about 5Y-PSZ ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A literature search was performed with articles that specifically evaluated ultra translucent zircônia in the PubMed database, the selected articles covered the period between 2010 and 2020, in addition to using older articles a in order to contextualize it. The selected papers describe the optical, mechanical and clinical applications of 5Y-PSZ. RESULTS: The literature shows that the chemical composition of this material provides greater translucency than other zircônia and its flexural strength allows its use in posterior and anterior unitary restorations. CONCLUSION: Adhesion does not seem to be an obstacle for indicating this zircônia in non-retentive areas, and this makes it a promising material for applicability in ceramic laminates, adopting a more conservative approach. However, as 5Y-PSZ was recently developed, further studies are needed to assess its properties and different clinical situations for the dentist to choose this material with confidence in clinical practice.
