The Effect of the Mainshock–Aftershock on the Estimation of the Separation Gap of Regular and Irregular Adjacent Structures with the Soft Story

Abstract: One way for decreasing the effect of pounding is to set the separation gap between two adjacent buildings. On the one hand, earthquakes in earthquake-prone zones often occur as a chain of successive earth movements in the form of foreshock, mainshock and aftershock. On the other hand, the existence of soft story in the lowest story of the structure is the most common type of irregularity in lateral stiffness. This paper investigates the effect of seismic sequences to estimate the separation gap at the highest … Show more

“…The manifold parameters involved result in multidirectional studies. Some of these studies were detected to quantify the safe separation distance between adjacent buildings, (e.g., see [44][45][46][47][48] among others). Other studies were conducted to investigate the effect of the dynamic characteristics of the involved structures either using a deterministic approach (e.g., [8,49] among many others) or using a probabilistic approach [6,50].…”

“…Pounding, which could occur due to an insufficient seismic gap, is an issue that needs to be examined in terms of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. For this purpose, there are several numerical but limited experimental studies in the literature on subjects such as the pounding force between two adjacent structures, the number of pounding, the moment of collision, and the determination and investigation of the size of the seismic gap [3][4][5][6][7][8]10].…”
