The Effect of the Heteroatom Moiety of Allylic Salts on the Addition Fragmentation Initiation of Cationic Polymerization

Abstract: Thermally and photoinduced cationic polymerizations of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) initiated by allylthiophenium, allylpyridinium, allylalkoxypyridinium and allylphosphonium salts with non‐nucleophilic counter anion hexafluoroantimonate and with an ethoxy carbonyl substituent at the allylic moiety were studied. The catalytic activities in the polymerization were examined and compared to those measured in both the absence and presence of added radical initiators.

“…Allylic sulfonium salts with various substituents at the allylic moiety can effectively convert radicals into radical cations that can initiate cationic polymerization of CHO 21, 22. The synthesis of allylic sulfonium salts involves the reaction of bromoallylic precursors with tetrahydrothiophene (Scheme ).…”

“…To investigate the substituent and counter ion effects on polymerization rate, a serious of allylic sulfonium salts ( 1a–d ) having different substituents at the allylic moiety and counter ions was prepared. They were synthesized according to the reported procedures 13, 14, 16, 20–22. The salts were obtained as white crystals.…”

“…Similarly to photolatent onium initiators that may be activated through the use of free radical coinitiator upon visible light, they suggested to activate thermolatent cationic initiators by using free radical sources that are released at lower temperature than the normal onium salt's temperature threshold [349][350][351][352]. To this end, they developed a series of specially designed allyl onium salts.…”
