This study explores the influence of e-learning tools on student satisfaction and loyalty within engineering programs. A survey administered to 67 Syrian engineering students and professors examined their perceptions of e-learning platforms. The results indicate a growing appreciation for e-learning's effectiveness in delivering educational content. The research highlights the particular value of e-learning tools during disruptions to traditional learning, such as pandemics. The study reveals a positive correlation between e-learning use and student academic performance, satisfaction among both students and professors, and a trend towards loyalty to these tools. Based on these findings, the study recommends adaptations in information presentation methods by professors to leverage the capabilities of e-learning tools. It emphasizes the importance of maximizing the potential of these tools and suggests implementing training programs for both students and faculty to enhance e-learning proficiency. The research also underscores the need for continuous curriculum updates to ensure compatibility with evolving e-learning technologies. Finally, the study recommends exploring additional benefits to incentivize continued engagement with e-learning tools by both students and educators.

When schools and universities across the world transitioned online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ed+gineering, a National Science Foundation (NSF) project that partners engineering and education undergraduates to design and deliver engineering lessons to elementary students, also had to shift its hands-on lessons to a virtual format. Through the lens of social cognitive theory (SCT), this study investigates engineering and education students’ experiences during the shift to online instruction to understand how they perceived its influence on their learning. As a result of modifying their lessons for online delivery, students reported learning professional skills, including skills for teaching online and educational technology skills, as well as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) content. Some also lamented missed learning opportunities, like practice presenting face-to-face. Students’ affective responses were often associated with preparing and delivering their lessons. SCT sheds light on how the mid-semester change in their environment, caused by the shift in designing and teaching from face-to-face to online, affected the undergraduate engineering and education students’ personal experiences and affect. Overall, the transition to fully online was effective for students’ perceived learning and teaching of engineering. Though students experienced many challenges developing multimedia content for delivering hands-on lessons online, they reported learning new skills and knowledge and expressed positive affective responses. From the gains reported by undergraduates, we believe that this cross-disciplinary virtual team assignment was a successful strategy for helping undergraduates build competencies in virtual skills. We posit that similar assignment structures and opportunities post-pandemic will also continue to prepare future students for the post-pandemic workplace.

Agile and Lean methodologies have transformed research and consulting practices, increasing efficiency, speed, and impact. However, successful implementation depends on a critical yet often overlooked factor: the human dimension. This chapter explores the importance of human factors in Agile and Lean transformations, drawing insights from compelling case studies. The analysis covers successful and unsuccessful implementations of Agile research sprints and Lean consulting. Successful cases demonstrate early consumer insights, rapid product iteration, enhanced team alignment in research (Case Study 1), streamlined operations, increased employee engagement, and a culture of continuous improvement in consulting (Case Study 2). Conversely, unsuccessful cases highlight the pitfalls of neglecting the human aspect. Forced Agile research led to data gaps, unclear findings, and researcher disengagement (Case Study 3), while resistance to Lean consulting resulted in stalled implementation, declining morale, and limited impact (Case Study 4). The chapter identifies key human factors crucial for successful Agile and Lean transformations by examining these contrasting outcomes. Optimising the human dimension is essential for unlocking the full potential of Agile and Lean methodologies. The chapter outlines future research directions, including understanding individual preferences, fostering team dynamics, measuring human impact, ensuring long-term sustainability, and adapting these methodologies to new research and consulting domains.
